asus r9 280 crashing when playing games

Hi I have a asus r9 280 and when I play games they will crash at random times to the most dominant color on the screen with lines running down it I have updated to the latest drivers and chipset drivers


syste, specs
os:windows 8.1
mobo:asus h87i-plus
cpu:intel i5-4460
gpu:asus r9 280 non x
ram (x2) balistics 4gb
psu:evga 500b

its not a over heating problem i have took it out of case and ran it and still get crashes

Is it overclocked? sounds like a unstable overclock to me.
