Hello everyone, hope you are having a great day.

Just now I bought a used ASUS R9280X-DC2T-3GD5 & I've been spinning around for hours to get it running, it didnt output anything when it was on first PCIe slot, then I found http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2121691/amd-drivers-amd-website-causing-windows-boot-failure.html ,so I decided to put the card in the second slot in my mobo (ASUS P8Z77-V PRO) & it worked!

Question is, how can I make the card run on the first PCIe slot?, and what does AHCI have to do with anything ?, & I cant disable ACHI because I have an SSD & my HDDs disappear when I do so. I reset CMOS, reinstalled drivers, couldn't fix it. Any Help is really appreciated .

no no... you see the AMD drivers install their own "sound card" for the hdmi output... a sound card is "in theory" controlled by your southbridge which is by extension in the AHCI/RAID driver family. So when it installs the HDMI sound device it installs some AHCI drivers to help the computer control the sound. That said i'm almost 100% certain this is more of something for a r9-290/290x or 260/260x and their amd true audio hardware. That said i do have a r9-280x, and i don't recall any ACHI drivers installing (though they might have).

I would say if anything what you need is better northbridge drivers, a bios update, or simply clr_cmos and reset the bios to stock... should clear up the problem with the PCI-E slot issue.

Definitely. Yesterday I was running games on my previous 560ti through the first PCIe slot.

Edit: I'm not sure if its a power proplem. I have a 720W PSU. Also no game would run at the same benchmarked performance online.

well... there is your problem. the 560ti doesn't come close to the power draw a r9-280x will. so a dying psu is a good explanation of the problem.

double check it's the psu not the switch or motherboard. pull the plugs from everything, on the big 24 pin plug, there is a green wire... take a paperclip, bend it like a U, stick one end into one of the pins with a black line running off it, and another into the one with the green line. if your psu starts your problem is a short, your motherboard, or the power switch.

Tried that. Its not working :'(
But I have a gigabyte superb e720, it should be enough right? Maybe I plugged a wire where its not supposed to be?
And if its a power problem why would it work in the 2nd slot?

Edit: worth mentioning that the 280x was sin 1st slot when PSU died, I plugged in 2x2 in the 4 pin input, one of them was a little tough to enter lol

Are you on the 14.4 driver? They have numerous problems as do the 14.6 RC and the 14.7 Beta, picked up an Asus 290X Matrix and am stuck with the 13 series drivers (same on a 280), they've shown and mentioned problems with AHCI component, and have seen what I experienced where the drivers don't 'see' secondary or tertiary monitors - so you can be stuck on a single monitor....great drivers 😉

i don't know why it worked on the 2nd slot. when i looked up the motherboard it claims that slot is only a pci-e 2.0x4 slot... perhaps the slower interface speed allowed the r9-280x to use less power?? no clue. that's a strange error...

but the fact your psu just died i think is proof enough your problem was probably caused by a bad psu. try the new one. see what happens. and yes, a 720W psu should be enough.

Just got Thermaltake smart se 730W. Plugged it all in, cleared CMOS, no luck. Still won't post from 1st PCIe slot. Plugged in my 560ti just to make sure that 1st PCIe slot works, & it does. I'm all out of ideas

Wait, you're not using the 8-pin connector that splits into two 4-pin connectors are you? You should be using the PCI-E power connectors (6+2 pin), the 4+4 pin connector is for CPU Auxillary power and power along that cable is delivered differently to PCI-E power cables

The second link is the one you should be using

Yup. Realized that a little too late. However I got a new PSU and the unholy problem still persists.

Sounds like you may have zapped the 280x then :/ Will it work in ANY PCI-E slot with the correct cables installed?

No, since day 1 the card would only function in the second PCIe. I got mad & started shoving wires. The card still works

On max settings, I get 15-40 frames on the witcher 2, 5 on BF3, & 15- 20 in Crysis 3. Doesn't seem right

Did you have these issues before you jammed in the CPU cable? And what resolution are we talking? 1080p?

EDIT: Also make sure your display cables are connected to the video card, not the motherboard, otherwise you'll be running off of integrated graphics
