Asus r9 280x not working, stuck on black screen after boot

I just bought an ASUS r9 280X GPU. I've changed GPU's before and I know the drill, at least on a basic level, so I can't identify the problem.

At first I completely removed the NVIDIA driver. Next I put in the new GPU. After plugging the card in and turning on the computer, the motherboard display screen (the one that says "Press F2 to enter BIOS Setup" etc.) shows the error code "5A". After a few seconds the screen then goes black, only displaying "0_" in the lower right corner. After this nothing happens on the screen, but all fans keep spinning the system SOUNDS to be working normally. The two green leds above the Power Pins on the GPU light green, showing that th card receives power correctly.

I've tried playing with different BIOS settings and disconnecting both many USB devices and I've also tried unplugging all SATA devices. All of these with no effects.

When I plug back in the old GPU (560 Ti) everything works perfectly fine.

I'd really love any help with this. Sorry if I left out any details, please ask! :)

Nvidia 560 TI (old gpu) / ASUS R9 280x (new gpu)
Corsair 520 HX power supply
Kingston 120 GB SSD
2 TB WD Black HDD

EDIT: I tried placing the card in the other PCI-E slot. Now nothing even shows on my monitor, not even when I put the card back into the first slot. The error-LED on the motherboard shows the following codes. It hangs on each code for a bit, and after the "cycle" is finished the system just reboots itself and starts over:

EDIT 2: Now it does the same with the old card... no signal to monitor. Nothing. Same error codes cycling. What have I done? :\

Best solution for letting the r9 280x boot on a GA-z77 mobo is change your boot priority to Legacy from UEFI mode

1. no need to update your bios
2. shutdown and plug-in your monitor to built in video interface (temporarily)
3. enter bios setup
4. configure 1st boot graphics to PCI
5. change the priority from UEFI to legacy save and exit.
6. shutdown and use the r9 280x's as your primary display then boot. it should work.

Figured that if I have an Asus GPU I should go with an Asus mobo... or?

ASUS P8Z77-V LX

Will this work and remain compatible with all my components?

Hi again.

After some googling, I found that some users with others motherboards who had similar problems with the new line of AMD cards solved it by enabling legacy roms. I can't really find this option in the bios to try it out, does it have another name? Is it the legacy I/O controller?

It didn't work. I've since last time also tested the card in another friends pc and it boots fine (well, low resolution since he has nvidia drivers installed but it boots fine. I'm assuming it used the onboard graphics as the amd card had no driver) so I'm 100% certain it's my mobo.

Do you have any preferences in regards to Asus p8z77-v LX and gigabyte GA-Z77P-3 or one of the similar models offered by the two brands? I don't know what to look for :\ My budget is around 500-800 DKK (1 euro = 7,5 DKK, 1 british pound = 9 DKK, one USD = 5,4 DKK)

EDIT: Also, in regards to my RAM, will it be possible to reuse it in the new mobo?

I bought the ASUS P8Z77-V LX and a Fractal Design Define R4 case, as I was going to reassmble everything anyway. No problems so far, the card delivers excellent performance.

I have the same motherboard (DP67BG), the same CPU (2600K i7), a similar GPU (Asus R9290) and I had the same issue (black screen after boot with half an error code showing the the lower left corner of the screen).

After reading this post and trying several different things to get my system going with the new GPU, I noticed that the machine was in fact booting into the OS (Windows 8) even though it was showing a black screen with an error code. I checked my router and sure enough Windows had booted and had requested an IP from router... so I installed a second PCI-E GPU, something that doesn't require extra power (very basic) and got Windows to boot to that. I then installed the AMD GPU drivers, shut down the machine, removed the low power secondary card and booted it again.

Whatever you do, don't enable UEFI - I think it's broken on these boards. I tried enabling UEFI and it took several boot cycles to disable it (the machine just froze on the BIOS diagnostic screen).

Windows detected the card, loaded the driver and bam! everything's working. The screen still goes black on boot with the error code but as soon as Windows loads everything runs normally.

If you don't have a secondary GPU to install the AMD drivers you could also install a remote admin package (like VNC of RAdmin), you could then install the drivers remotely over the network.

I've bought and commissioned several Intel motherboards in recent years and although the boards themselves are really good quality, the firmware is really low grade - I'm reluctant to buy Intel motherboards again (I'll probably stick to Asus, they're amazing).

I hope this post helps someone, it would have helped me.

I'm having the exact same problem and have the exact same specifications as Nime1312.

DP67BG Mb
2600K cpu
R9 280X

I dont have enough money for a new motherboard ;( If I can get it working like you I'll be the happiest person on the planet!

I do however have a very simple additional GPU that requires basically no additnal power. my question is: did you have both your R 9 290 and simple gpu plugged in at the same time? how did you make the simple one the primary one? Or did you boot using JUST the simple gpu?

Also, when I use the second pci slot for any gpu I get no picture/video outpu/signal. The only one that seems to output is the pci slot closest to the motherboard

I would be so so grateful if you could help me to get this to work. Neither the Intel or Amd people have been able to help so far.

Really frustrating since o just spent so much money.

I had this exact problem with my setup with is more than good enough to handle the 280x.

I recieved a XFX R9 280X for relatively cheap and installed it(as per the documented instructions that came from XFX) and my system would not boot running just off the GPU outputs. I then plugged another monitor into the mobo to allow the integrated graphics to show me the desktop where I found the 280X was not being recognised.

After hours and hours of reading threads and removing and reinstalling the GPU, trying Legacy boot instead of UEFI etc etc I remembered the card had 1 x 8pin PCIe power input and 1 x 6pin PCIe power input.

This instructions illustrated to install 2 x 6pin power inputs(which I did upon first install) and my issues getting it to register followed.

JUST when I was considering to sell the card and get a GTX 770 I remembered the odd inputs on the card and the instructions.
I then removed the 6 pin connector from the GPU, replaced with an 8 pin connector(filling the entire input) and BOOM! It worked first boot!

I hope this helps people ALSO following misleading instructions.

Hi guys i also had the exact same problem. i have intel dz68zv mobo and gigabyte r9 280x gpu. I also got the 5x error and black screen with 0 but my computer does boot up i can hear the sound. I just followed your steps man and damn IT WORKED. i had to remote log in and install the gpu drivers. then i restarted but didnt worked. i replaced my gpu again and bam it worked. thnx a lot for sharing this information. it was really helpful. :)

I have a similar problem, i switched from an Nvidia GTS 450 to a R9 280 (not 280x) and my screen goes black after windows 8.1 login my account but the thing that let me think is the fact that i have also graphical issues in the bios (i have a ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 with UEFI BIOS).
my bios seem all black except for the clock, but when i move the mouse, where i move the mouse, the screen become visible, i don't know what to do. (sorry for my bad english)

I have a MSI R9 285 and had the problem when trying to enter 0_ windows
INTEL have a maimboard DP55KG with i7 875K processor, had a card HD 4500 video q worked well and decided to buy the R9 285
as I had installed windows just put the new card and stayed after the Intel logo 0_
According to Intel 0_ it is not a mistake but that Windows is ready to begin ... and it's true but that was not what happened
after many attempts and a big disappointment because I thought I was going to use that card, I decided to sell it ... but one day it occurred to me to test more ..
provided that tests only connected to the monitor, mouse, keyboard and nothing more ... but that day also connect the speakers
and I came out the same 0 _... but I had connected a pendrive and remove note that the speakers sound emitted when a device is removed in Windows
That was when I realized that Windows was operating, but for some reason did not send the monitor image ... was when I realized that the whole problem is that these cards to be connected to a port shipped 2.0 being 3.0 at 600 x 400 monitor which does not recognize now ... solution? remotely from another machine connected to the Internet and the problem also connected to the internet you do it is connect via teamveawer to install the drivers for the new card remotely solved ... and VOILA ...
note ... this will solve long tube penalty but hehe units and therefore share the hehe solution it is that nobody says this in any forum AHH POR CIERTO.. SOY LATINO, SORRY X LO TRADUCIDO

tengo una MSI R9 285 y tenia el problema del 0_ al intentar ingresar a windows
tengo un maimboard INTEL DP55Kg con un procesador i7 875K, tenia una tarjeta de video HD 4500 q funcionaba bien y decidi comprar la R9 285
como ya tenia instalado windows solo puse la tarjeta nueva y se quedaba después del logo de INTEL en 0_
segun Intel 0_ no es un error sino que windows esta preparado para iniciar... y es cierto pero eso no era lo que pasaba
después de muchos intento y una decepción grande porque pensé que iba poder usar esa tarjeta, decidí venderla... pero un día se me ocurrió hacer una prueba mas..
siempre que hacia las pruebas solo conectaba el monitor, mouse, teclado y nada mas... pero ese día también conecte los parlantes
y me salia el mismo 0_... pero yo tenia conectado un pendrive y al sacarlo note que los parlantes emitieron el sonido de cuando se quita un dispositivo en windows
fue cuando me di cuenta que windows estaba operativo, pero que por algún motivo no enviaba imagen al monitor... fue cuando me di cuenta que todo el problema es que estas tarjetas al ser conectadas a un puerto 2.0 siendo 3.0 envían una resolución de 600 x 400 cosa que un monitor de ahora no reconoce... solución? remotamente desde otra maquina conectada a internet y la del problema también conectada al internet lo que hacemos es mediante teamveawer conectarnos para instalar los drivers de la tarjeta nueva remotamente... y VOILA... solucionado
nota... esto lo solucione hace tiempo pero jeje tube pena de uds y por eso comparto la solución jeje y es que nadie dice esto en ningún foro and I am LATINO :)
ahh forget me say that the solution has to be installed above windows mind with another video card and uninstall the driver before this process and there q have TeamViewer installed on both machines knowing the password you have problems ... both have to be connected to internet and the bad news is that if we can not fix these things and what's worse ... no machine can format the problems with this board installed all explained above, since to do so would first format the machine with other compatible graphics card "2.0" and put the teamviewer and after that make the process

ahh me olvide decir que la solución necesita tener instalado windows anterior mente con otra tarjeta de video y desinstalar los driver antes de este proceso y que hay q tener el teamviewer instalado en ambas maquinas sabiendo la contraseña de la que tiene problemas... ambas tienen que estar conectadas a internet y la mala noticia es que si no tenemos estas cosas no podremos solucionarlo y lo que es peor aun... no podremos formatear la maquina con problemas con esta tarjeta instalada por todo lo explicado anteriormente, ya que para ello tendríamos que primero formatear la maquina con otra tarjeta gráfica compatible "2.0" y ponerle el teamviewer y después de eso hacer el proceso
