Hello folks,

I've recently bought an Asus xdsl AC88u modem/router. It has been setup using 192.168.0.1 as its IP address however a lot of the time it seems to broadcast 192.168.1.254 as its IP address to the clients on my network. I have no idea where this Ip address is coming from but I think it might relate to my neighbours BT home hub. Why would my router be picking this up and issuing this as its own IP address?? It seem do do this randomly (but a lot more) on the 5GHz band and appears to issue the correct IP address of 192.168.0.1 more often on the 2GHz network. Obviously when the router issues the wrong router IP address my clients cant access the internet as they are looking at my neighbours BT home hub address of 192.168.1.254.

Any ideas what might be causing this or how to fix? Asus technical support are appauling...they have not responded for over a week and two phone calls have left me thining I'll never buy one of their products again... :-(

Any thoughts much appreciated,

Thanks
R.

So why do you THINK the asus is sending out the 192.168.1.254 address. If you have set the lan ip to 192.168.0.x it will only use that subnet. If you had come here and asked how do I make the router send out ip outside its subnet I would have told you you can't. Consumer routers are very simplistic you would need third party firmware.

So now your challenge is to try to find the device that actually is sending out that IP. You should not even be able to see what IP addresses your neighbor is using unless their network is not setup with proper wifi encryption.

You need to ensure your equipment is only connecting to your network and you have properly set the SSID and passwords. You need to make sure the SSID is different from...
I will suggest you change your IP and address for DNS on your route to be 192.168.x.1 where x is any number between 1 and 254 (I use 105) and this prevent compatibility IP issues with Cable Modems (which also use 192.168.0.1 by defaults) just a though try that and it should resolve issues quickly.

Thanks. I originally had the router setup as using 192.168.1.1 (its default) but changed it to 192.168.0.1 to see if this would remove any conflict but that didn't seem to help. Would your suggestion above be any different do you think??

If you still get 192.168.1.254 addresses then you have a device on your network that is producing it. You should be able to see the mac address and then check every device you have to see if it matches.

Solution
Hi bill001g,

The problem must be with the router as I've never had a problem with previous routers and having just reverted back to my sky ISP router, the problem has gone away (my router IP address is stable and consistent)...so I can only assume that the Asus router was at fault. The Asus router was picking up an IP address associated with a BT home hub which I definitely do not have in my house anywhere...which is why I thought it was somehow getting confused with a neighbours router. It would flip between a router IP address of 192.168.0.1 (correct) and 192.168.1.254 (bt home hub) and I could not understand why or predict when it would do this....

I contacted Asus technical support a week ago about this problem and have called them twice since. I have heard nothing from them and when Ive called their support line they have been worse than useless. Asus technical support is awful. As a result I will return the router and buy another brand. Thinking of the TP-Link VR2800. Anybody got views on TP link and this router?
