From time to time my Asus RT-AC88U AC3100 will not let you log in with the WiFi SSID of my main network, reports incorrect password (even though it's correct) However you can log in to my guest network with its password to go online?

In the system, I also have 2 'Mesh routers' Asus RT-AC67U AC1900, that create two (cabled) Wifi access points.

Normally a power cycle of the main AC88 will get things up and running again and the main wifi network can be connected to , however currently the issue is that I can connect via the Mesh AC67 AP's, but not the main AC88? Also the other issue this time is that I am unable to connect to items on my home network while away from home using port forwarding, IP camera, servers, AC88 admin etc.

Anyone else have similar issues?

Also apart from the above I have noticed from time to time while on my AC88 home page the number of Mesh devices can change 0,2,1,2,2,2,1,1,2 etc. every 30 sec or so.....

This is one of the reasons I hate any form of link aggregation. The method used to choose the path the data takes tends to cause issues to appear to be random. It tends to be very hard unless you suspect a issue with the port bonding to test and force traffic over one link or the other.

I have spent so much time chasing strange errors like this. Problem is you reset a port and the problem goes away for a while and you don't even suspect it was a port aggregation issue. I would see things like some file transfers would run slow because it was running on the link that was having issues. I would rerun the test which used different port numbers and it would move to the other link and not have problems. Took a long time to see...

Found one of my unraid servers that has Ethernet connections with one at 100 not 1000, also shown on 24 port router with orange not green LED (Showing all as 1000 on unraid seerver). Plulled plug and replaced and it came back green at 1000Mbit THEN some other wired devices came back and I could connect to, also home wifi working.

What the hell happened I dont know.

Following on from my discovery (shown above) that of the two 1Gb links between my 8 Port Switch and my 24 Port Switch and one had dropped to 100Mb. When 'testing' from the 8 port switch (ports 3 > 23 and 4 >24)

Shows and open cable at 2Mtr (Patch cable to socket is 1Mtr but not a bad guess). Once unplugged and plugged back in then retested, the missing wired (Alarm panel) and the home network on the AC88U came back to life. I also sorted out port 6 later in the day. Port 7 is correct.

Port 3 > 23 and 4>24 now ok. The patch cables from the Cat 6 sockets are quite think Cat 7 and look like they may pull on the socket sometime, wonder if that what opened a core or two, causing speed to drop?

24 Port switch now shows correct two x 1Gb links on 23 and 24

Conclusion (and question)

So looks like that was the issue, one of the bonded links not allowing devices to connect to the home network even with the AC88U factory reset. But as soon as that cable was removed and plugged back in so both were back at 1Gb again all was well.

So How and Why????

This is one of the reasons I hate any form of link aggregation. The method used to choose the path the data takes tends to cause issues to appear to be random. It tends to be very hard unless you suspect a issue with the port bonding to test and force traffic over one link or the other.

I have spent so much time chasing strange errors like this. Problem is you reset a port and the problem goes away for a while and you don't even suspect it was a port aggregation issue. I would see things like some file transfers would run slow because it was running on the link that was having issues. I would rerun the test which used different port numbers and it would move to the other link and not have problems. Took a long time to see that the only difference was the random port numbers that were being chosen by the servers also affected the path the port aggregation picked.

10gig and faster ports have greatly reduced the need for port aggregations and all the hassles involved.
