As I understand, it's only a router. You'll need to hook it up to your modem to obtain internet access. Usually, this is done by having the modem hook into whatever your direct home connection is, and then use an RJ45/Ethernet to the master Ethernet port of the router.

I have N version (RT-N66U), loaded with Tomato, and it serves close to 30 PCs plus VoIP flawlessly. Wireless is good enough to go outside the building.
However, from even more study, I'm going to opt for the FRITZ!Box 3390 instead. Does everything I want, except maybe 'ac' speed. I can live with that as I will use the four giga LAN sockets, rather than wireless.
