Hello guys, someone is selling a used asus rx 580 dual fan , it was used for mining for about 6 months , he's selling it for about 200$ , is it worth buying, and how's mining effects the gpu lifetime , and he have an msi rx 580 gaming x, he's selling it for less because one of the fans has a part broken but the fan work without issue
Note : a new msi rx 580 armor cost 260$

Solution
No, hard pass. You wouldn't have a warranty on a card mor likely to fail, and here's a NEW RX 580 for $190:

Even if it was cheaper, I'd STILL it's not worth buying. That GPU was used 24 hours a day for 6 months. That's as much usage as someone gaming 4 hours a day for 3 years, or 8 hours a day for a year and a half.

Plus, many miners also tried to get every drop of performance out of a card, running it as hot as they possibly could while...

Plus, many miners also tried to get every drop of performance out of a card, running it as hot as they possibly could while keeping it stable. That really can affect the longevity of the card, particularly if this card was pushed until it overheated, before pulling back to more reasonable settings.

There may be answers from people who said "I bought a used mining card and everything is great," but it is still a risk. Even if it's a small risk (10%? 1%? 0.1%? who knows), you will still be out 100% of your money since you wouldn't be covered by any warranty. Plus, as I said, you can get the same card, new, for less.

If this guy dropped the price down to $100, my answer might be different, but I'd only say that while accepting the risk that you might well be out $100 when a capacitor blows on the card.

Solution

This largely isn't true of cards used for mining in the latest mining craze of the last year or two. Most RX 580s would have been used to mine Ethereum, in which case they're typically undervolted and underclocked (on the GPU core) to improve efficiency.

Guys let me first explain something : in my country gpus prices are overpriced so an msi rx 580 armor is 260$ and evga gtx 1050 2GB is 160$ , I can't get a gpu from amazon or Newegg because they're not shipping to my country, so I can just buy from local shops which is expensive

I missed the part where the card has a broken fan part. What do you mean the fan has a broken part yet "works without issue"? What's broken then? A card that's physically damaged would probably be a deal breaker for me.

Are you able to see this card working in a PC prior to buying it? Are potentially able to negotiate on price?

I'm not sure what the warranty situation is in your country (Libya?).

I would say that if the cost of the GPU is a significant amount of money to you, you should ABSOLUTELY get a warranty to protect you, and the used mining card will have NO warranty. That means there is a chance you could be out $200 with NO GPU whatsoever if it fails. To me, spending an extra 30% for a GPU with a warranty, so that you KNOW you will have a working GPU in a year IS worth it.

The real question is this: In your country, what kind of GPU can you find new for $200? Or $150?

I won't tell you what to do but, personally, I would never spend 2 months income on a GPU, or a month's income on a used GPU that could fail tomorrow. I absolutely would not buy a GPU that is already failing, even if it works alright for now - it is likely that something else could fail soon.

In my country (Libya ) it's hard to find pc parts , so everyone gets card from usa and Europe and start to selling the card for the price he like , the msi rx 580 armor for 260$ is the cheapest one I found, the gtx 1050 ti goes for around ~200$ , gtx 1050 ~160$

I'll ask again, are you able to personally verify that the card is working before buying? Or is there any sort of buyer protection or return policy offered by whatever source you're buying through?

I agree with what was said above, if you're spending the equivalent of two months of pay you want to be very careful. To be honest I'd question spending on that on a PC component at all. Unless you're in high school or something and you're just talking about what you're making working part time or something.
