Question Asus TUF 3080Ti overheat - fans intermittently stopping under load

Strange one in my sons PC. Was working fine, GPU temps under load rarely exceeded 60c (two different games). Using Armoury Crate for case leds, case fans and CPU fan, MSI afterburner for GPU fans and on-screen monitoring of fps and temps. GPU switch set to 'performance'. Yes latest bios, video card driver and MSI afterburner/Rivatuner. All fans set to max out if temps hit 60c.

Walked in on him 2 weeks ago and GPU hitting 90c+, looked under GPU and FANS WERE NOT SPINNING !?. We switched off, reseated power cables, video card and updated video driver (never far behind latest). Worked fine for a day or to. Today walked in and saw GPU temps again around 90c and case fans going ballistic (as always in games). Son claimed fans were spinning but can't confirm as he can hardly see them from his seat. Exited game (which crashed on exit !?), restarted PC and flicked the GPU switch a few times (left on performance), all fine again and games running around 58c.....till the next time !!

As in my sig but later ROG STRIX Z790-A Gaming WiFi D4 motherboard and old Antec tower case (3 case fans).

Do you have the specific model number for the Seasonic PSU?

There are some known issues with some Seasonic PSUs and the high-end 3000 series GPUs. Lots of traffic on it a few years back.

Best I can do right now is from the original order. Will update if I can see anything on the rear later... But power supply stops the GPU fans and the game carries on fine ??, very weird if true.

Hmmmm interesting. I guess the 'tripping out' they talk about only affected the 12v line which is used to power the GPU fans ?. I'll try to find info on the ferrite bead fix, which 9nes to buy and exactly which wire to put it on (I guess one for each of the two GPU power leads). If anyone has a link to a 'how to' I'd be grateful 😊

Before doing anything, I recommend verifying what PSU model, as previously discussed, you have.

My "fix" when I experienced it was to replace the PSU with one that did not have the problem.

That original PSU is still alive and well, rocking along, in a family member's PC. One that does not have a RTX 3080 Ti.

Hopefully I'll remove the power supply tomorrow so i can see the label, we have two so will be interesting to see if there's any difference between them..... On the other hand the quoted links seem to be talking of the whole PC shutting down, not just the GPU fans ??

Just ruling out a potential issue by verifying the model info.

Yes and great minds think alike. I'll swap the video cards ASAP but will not be able to hammer the PC as my son does now for at least another week (maybe two) when he returns. I'll hopefully post a photo of his Seasonic label tomorrow though and maybe have a look at mine too for comparison.

Run something like Cinebench or Superposition to stress the GPU after swapping to see what happens.

Was there a manufacture date on the label?

No date obvious anywhere. Serial numbers of both supplies start with R2105AA335780. Not had chance to swap the GPU. Will update when my son returns.

Understood. PSU could be okay, leaving the GPU itself as the likely issue.

I would remove Afterburner to ensure it isn't affecting the testing.
