Motherboard + Ram Combo: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Motherboard (BF3 Edition) + GSkill Ripjaw Z Series 16GB DDR 3 2400 - $744.98
Graphics Card: ASUS Matrix GTX 580 x 2 - $1,059.98
Hard Drive: OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 240GB - $699.99
Hard Drive: Hitachi Deskstar 3TB 7200RPM HDD x 2 - $659.98

Cooling: Tuniq TX-4 Thermal Compound - $11.99
Blu Ray Drive: Asus Blu Ray Drive $57.99

Total: $4,999.83

I picked the Lian-Li case for it's great features, most notably, 11 expansion slots which allows for me to put the second GTX 580 in the bottom slot so I still have access to most of my PCI-E expansion slots.

The Money Bonfire
Processor: Intel Core i7 3930K - $599.99
Motherboard: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Motherboard - $469.99
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Redline 16GB - $209.99
Graphics Card: 3x ASUS ENGTX580 DCII/2DIS/1536MD5 - $1,499.97 ($499.99 each)
Hard Drive: 2x Corsair Force Series GT (120GB) -$379.98 ($189.99 each)
Case: Mountain Mods U2-UFO CYO - $429.99 As Configured
10x 120mm Black Steel Mesh Fan Guard- $29.90
Power Supply: ENERMAX MAXREVO Series EMR1350EWT- $249.99
DVD Burner: LG Blu-ray Disc Rewriter WH12LS38 - $69.99
Custom Water Cooling: - $1040.80

TOTAL: $4980.59

The PCI brackets for the GTX 580 DCII's will have to be modified slightly so that they only occupy two slots, otherwise they will conflict, without water cooling the cards triple SLI would not be physically possible at all. Besides this, it is easily possible for the Mountain Mods case to accumulate all the components of this set up, and look incredibly cool doing so. In the vain of a different kind of "cool" putting this animal under water unleashes it's overclocking potential, adding additional power to what one might call "Ultimate Power" anyway.

For this system I have a 3930k with 3 GTX 580's in SLI with water cooling. The Silverstone TJ07 can fit a 120.2 radiator on the top and a 120.4 on the bottom so i decided to cool the 3930k with a corsair H100 and cool the 3 GTX 580's with a separate water cooling system. I also added one of the fastest SSD's on the market for lag free performance. 16GB of DDR3 2400 air cooled. This system will roar!

Are custom-fabricated cooling systems and cases allowable? Seems like it's a yes, if "cut-to-length" flexible tubing is allowable...
I have my own designs and schematics that I have planned to use on my own "1337" builds, and they're as easy for me to machine as someone else might find cutting PVC tubing.

IF, I can use my own custom hardware (with appropriate estimate for costs), what other information would be needed?

Karash's Komputer Krusher 😱

Built with the best components I could find to make the most kick-ass rig possible! I wish I could have this PC. Perhaps I could take command of the next NASA mission. 😀

No discrete audio card in this build because the motherboard has an awesome integrated audio controller supporting up to 8 channels.

BattleField 3 (with Motherboard)

I had a ton of fun "building" this one up.
I used my favorite case, and modded it with EL wire in the front grill. (image below is a simulation)
Also, I have the little red LED lights inside my real computer, and they work very well... so had to add those in.
This extreme build is meant to be a balance of extremes... the PCIe SSD card will fit nicely in the extra x8 slot that ASUS was kind enough to provide right between the two x16 based slots. So... I can fit two GTX580s and 240GB of SSD on the motherboard. Thanks ASUS!
So we have a screaming fast SSD, and 4 TB of HDD space beside.
And the H80 liquid cooler has shined in all the bench testing recently. I can finally make room for it in one of my builds.
Don't know if I'll win... but I tell you what... if I had the $5000 this IS the machine I would build.

Total: $4998.29

Edit: Had to change video cards as the reference Asus 6970s are no longer in stock anywhere. Their only other high end cards are triple slot, so changed to Matrix 580s triple sli, as the motherboard cant fit 4 (3 works as long as the case has 9 or more expansion slots). Changed HDD & RAM to account for the increase in cost.

The 2 ASUS MARS II GTX 580 x2 will set in the first and third 16X red slot. They will cover 6 slots with one slot between for air flow to the first card. The second card only covers over the 4th red PCI-E slot so connections are easily accessible. The should supply enough power to OC all 4 GPU's past 820MHz and the CPU. The Add2psu can be stacked for as many PSU as your first PSU has molex connectors. Given these cards could do 870MHz the extra power is important.

Asus has said most cards will do 800MHz GPU clocks easily, the majority will do 820MHz, and a smaller number are hitting around 870MHz.

While the ASUS MARS II is high priced 4 X 580's would require water cooled, cost more, and breaks the budget.

Special note: I estimate these 2 video cards to pull 83 AMP's or nearly 1000W stock. Each card can pull over 700 WATTs while overclocked. I now have 2 X 900 WATT PSU's which should allow an upper GPU limit for OC around 850MHz. The old Thermaltake Toughpower XT TPX-1475M would have keep this build down around stock so major plus for the 2 X PSU change.

While an EATX case isn't required for the extra 1.1 inch motherboard lip my case does include the stated spec. Most cases have more room than standard ATX for larger video cards this may not affect many older cases. If the motherboard was full EATX IE... 3.4 inch extra lip then many cases wouldn't work. The lenths are ATX 9.6 inch's, EATX 13 inch's, and ASUS Rampage IV 10.7 inch's with all 3 having a 12 inch width.

Splitting up the 64GB (8 x 8GB) into two 4 x 8GB bundles with the Processor and Motherboard lead to combo discounts of $130 instead of a max of $100 if I tried to use just one bundle. I also ordered everything from NewEgg, as they've taken care of any problems I've had in the past, and it'd keep the order simple enough to avoid trying shave a few more dollars off by splitting the order up. (Although, with a few dollars more, I could have gotten a pair of 3GB drives, instead of 2GB drives...)

Why the H80 instead of the H100? Simple, if I win, the H80 is part of the prize. It'll be part of my dream system if I win, so it should be part of my dream system here. 🙂
