ASUS X99 Deluxe II USB Port Issues Windows 10

I built a new system (see tech specs below) with a clean install of windows 10 and all new or wiped drives, any USB device plugged into any USB port 2.0/3.0/3.1 at boot works as expected. Any USB device plugged in after windows has loaded is not recognised and appears in device manager under other devices (code28). Any attempt to update the driver results in Windows could not find driver software for your device.

If the system is run in Safe Mode any USB device can be unplugged re-plugged and swapped between ports as many times as I like with it being instantly recognised across all the available USB ports (front and rear of case). From this I’m reasonably sure it’s not a hardware issue – please feel free to correct me if this isn’t sound reasoning.

The rest of the system is stable as far as I can tell and if all the USB devices are plugged in at boot you would never know there was an issue. It was rendering in 3ds max for about 6hours with all 12cores at 100% and it never got over 45deg so temps look good.

I think the issue is a USB controller driver but I’m a bit stuck on how to identify which one it is causing the problem. I downloaded the latest ASmedia USB3.1/3.0 Drivers from ASUS which have a driver version of 1.16.33.1 however in device manager it lists the version as 1.16.35.1 which I think is being installed by windows 10. If I try and install the 1.16.33.1 version, I instantly get an IRQL not less or equal error and the system reboots and keeps/installs the 1.16.35.1 driver. If I turn off automatic updates and uninstall the ASmedia driver it defaults back to an older Microsoft driver which still gives the same USB issue. Installing the 1.16.33.1 driver in safe mode results in a “your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart”. It’s not happy.

In the BIOS I have the following USB settings:
• Intel xHCI Mode: Smart Auto
• EHCI Legacy Support: Auto
• xHCI Hand-off: Enabled
• EHCI Hand-off: Enabled

I have tried the above bios options is multiple combinations none of which resolve the issue. If somebody does know the correct settings that would be useful.

At this point I’m open to all ideas or if anybody else has a ASUS Deluxe II board do you have the same issues and if you don’t what USB drivers are you running?

Things I have tried (for testing all USB devices were removed except keyboard and mouse and an 8GB Kingston Data Traveller was used to test USB ports once windows had loaded):

• Reinstalled windows as an in place upgrade.
• Updated all drivers that I can find from ASUS and Intel (see device manager section above)
• Reinstalled all USB drivers in device manager + run update.
• Updated MB Bios to 0601 (latest version available)
• Completely powered down the system unplugged the power and removed the battery + cleared the CMOS
• Replaced the Motherboard battery
• Run MemTest86 – no issues found
• Run windows in safe mode – all USB ports work
• Run CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Super AntiSpyWare and Full Avast System scan in windows and at boot – no issues.
• Run “SFC /SCANNOW” and “Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth” – no issues

Solution
1| Have you tired disabling automatic device driver updates and then manually removing the USB controllers from Device Manger?
2| You may want to lay off the ASMedia USB controllers ports and verify if the USB ports native to the Intel chipset function for you or if they are too under the same mess.
3| Try a repair install and see if the issue is alleviated.

You may want to install the drivers in:
a| an elevated command;
Right click installer>Run as Administrator

b| In compatibility mode;
Right click installer>Properties>Compatibility Tab>Windows 7/8 [from drop down menu]

FYI, your peripherals don't need to run off USB 3.0 ports they work best under USB 2.0 ports :sarcastic:.

Hi Lutfij - cheers for the ideas, i currently have it working i had to install windows 10 again (using the reset this PC option), i think it was/is the ASMedia USB3.1 eXtensible Host Controller (ASMedia Technology Inc 11/04/2016 1.16.35.1) as i have updated everything except that one which is currently running on version ASMedia Technology Inc 03/06/2015 1.16.26.1

You're welcome! Often times the corruption in the OS for Windows is what causes unusual errors coming about. The next step is sourcing the latest drivers to help your OS communicate with your devices. Do remember to disable automatic device driver updates which is what causes these issues cropping up midway through your wonderful computing experience.
