Question ASUS Z390 Pro Bus Interface

I want to install a GPU and I know that two of the four x16-sized slots on my motherboard have full x16 connectivity. This makes me think that either one will operate at the same speed. However, the BIOS has a “Bus Interface” setting that can select from either X16_1 or X16_2 and I don’t know what it means. Any insights appreciated.
