Hi there
I damaged my old motherboard and replaced it with a Asus Z9Z-A with an i7 4790K CPU. However i'm unable to get it to post. The screen is completely black, i've tried with a single ram dimm and dual channel and I am not using a video card. I have reset the CMOS with the jumper and removed the battery i've reseated the CPU. I have attempted to update the BIOS as the 4790k isn't supported with the stock BIOS, i have a pen drive plugged in with the renamed BIOS file and tried to get it to boot from it this was the first diagnosis I tried. Im running short on ideas now so any help would be much appreciated.

Edit: Research also led to potentially a faulty PSU so I tried the paper clip test on the 24 pin and some fans which powered on fine

"The monitor in question can pick up other devices through HDMI fine and picked up the GPUs from this PC prior, do you think i should try a GPU instead of onboard. So I tried a GPU no VGA error light, but didnt post either "

It's your previous post.
Glad that you've solved it. Good luck!

I don't think anything happened as the board did not load up a BIOS utility onto the screen the pen drive im using doesnt have an LED in it

Make sure that the USB is inserted in the correct Flashback port. Don't start the board. Just press the Flashback button. The led on the board should start flashing.

This board doesnt seem to have a specific flashback port or button. The manual simply shows for flashback to insert the usb into any port and wait. Its called Asus CrashFree BIOS 3 utility.

The number is 1205

CPU is supported, no need to update the BIOS.
I suggest following the steps below:
Leave only CPU, CPU fan, single RAM module, DVD drive, keyboard and mouse connected to the motherboard.
Monitor connected to the onboard, graphics card removed.
Start the board.
If no signal to the monitor, power off and move the RAM to the next slot. Start the board. Check each slot.

I have no graphics cards connected, my CPU and CPU fan installed, I dont have a dvd drive. I will disconnect drives, front I/O, USB ports, and test ram in each slot

I have now tried to boot with each stick of ram tired single channel in each slot, and dual channel in all combonations the DRAM light next to the MemOk! button did not stay on in any of these tests, but if the machine is booted with no RAM in then the light does come on

There are no bent pins so I guess I will RMA it im in the process of communicating with the store I bought it from and also emailng Asus directly.
