Athlon 754 or 939-pin?

I'm in the market for a new MB/Processor combo to upgrade my A7V266-E/Athlon 2200+XP/512MB OCZ PC2700/Ti4200 Video.

I was considering the MSI Neo Platinum board with a Athlon 64 3200+ Processor, 512MB RAM (what speed?) and some video adapter with Video Input capability.

In searching for the 754 boards, I noticed the 939 boards with Dual Channel RAM capabilities, but I also noticed the sticker-shock of the $800 Athlon 64 Processors for 3500+ speeds!!

The question is, dooes anyone really see the need to have the 939 versus 754 platform upon which to build my replacement PC?

Advice? Opinions? Suggestions on either my MB choice or the 939/754 dilemma?

Socket 939 offers maybe a 10% performance boost over 754 for about twice the price. You made a good choice.

If your not going to upgrade much and buy a complete new system again go for the 754.

socket 939 does not offer 10% inrease in performance over socket 754. its way out. some benchmarks socket 754 wins some socket 939. to be honest soclet 939 with these cpu models have been a disappointmentt.but it doesnt hinder performance as well. if you got the money go for socket 939 but current socket 754 cpus are very good deals and offer same performance.

If you don't plan to upgrade your CPU within 18 months, then Socket 754 is the way to go. Reasons- better value, practically no loss in performance, the best chipset is currently not available for S939 (nForce3 250).

For CPU, I recommend "Newcastle" A64 3200+ (2.2 GHz, 512k L2 cache). They're better than Clawhammer A64 3200+ (2.0 GHz, 1MB L2 cache) at stock speed.

Put this in MSI K8N Neo Platinum, and you will be very satisfied.
