For speed and rendering power -> Thunderbird (Athlon) (better floating point)

For easy setup -> P III (because VIA's chipset is glitchy requiring time to bug-proof it, installing new drivers, etc. With the intel, you have a much better chance of just setting up and running perfectly the first time)

Yes. Since Intel dropped their prices recently the PIII is becoming a more attractive option, especially if you want to carry over a few cards from you previous system. The Athlon gives you a miniscule performance gain for less money, if you a adept at fixing your new computer!

A Thunderbird will usually outperform a PIII. However, be ready to be solving problems and thinking if you go for the Thunderbird option, just in case. The PIII is nice and simple, but doesn't quite compare to the performance of a Thunderbird.
