I was wondering if anyone knew much about ATI's catalyst control A.I. concept and what was the best/ideal setting for it. I noticed in my control center there's 3 settings: none, low, and high. It is currently set on low....what do you guys typically set it at?

Supposedly it ID's certain games and/or post rendering techniques where it can optimize for better performance. ATi engineers know about such situations, and they can let the driver "see" it and use it to it's advantage.

NONE - Disabled
LIGHT - Runs in low key mode and sort of dismisses artifacts because of optimization gone wrong or to far
HIGH - Runs fully, regardless of artifacts (if present). If you use this one, and see some weird sh*t, drop back to light.

I haven't paid much attention to the AI - as no one actually knows just wich game or instance of post rendering in which scenario can benefit from this. Leaving it at high is okay, until you get some issues.

ATI Catalyst drivers slammed by 3D firm

Claims they're unusable and that others agree

By INQUIRER staff: Sunday 07 May 2006, 12:25

A FIRM that makes 3D graphics software has decided to take a swing at ATI's Catalyst OpenGL display drivers.
And it claims a heap of other developers support its stance.

The firm 3D Nature, said in an announcement that the display drivers are "unsuitable" for professional real time visualisation.

Further, said 3D Nature, "all past and current ATI Catalyst drivers for all ATI Radeon series display cards" have critical bugs that "render the hardware unusable".

The firm claimed ATI has known about the problems since last year but hasn't addressed the bugs nor acknowledged them publicly.

A page on the web site claims a number of other developers have joined 3D Nature in its protest. The full list is here. µ

Yeah - what a useless post. Where does OpenGL tie into the AI story? The people who wrote that stupid article should get a life, REALLY!

I can't actually call it a post - more like a bad paste.

And I'm with StrangeStranger here, OpenGL really does not concern me much.

Thank you, Captain nVidia
How about answering the question?

I keep it off, cause it did some weird stuff while I was playing Counter-Strike.
Not sure if that was a problem that occures once and never again, but after all I dont really care that much 😱

It's already been said, but serious!

ATI Catalyst drivers slammed by 3D firm

WTF does that have to do with AI or his question ya' n00b fanboi !?! :x

Nature is a professional workstation app and they are talking about FireGL cards using FireGL drivers, which don't use AI at all.

Seriously, go spam somewhere else ya' tool!

Enabling it is sometimes not just a good thing but a necessary thing (For Oblivion, for F.E.A.R.) because it allows the driver to assume control of settings that would otherwise cause issues or not allow certain added features. But as has been mentioned it's optimizations sometimes cause anomalies, which is when you want to turn it off.

Turning it to high is good when it works well in an app, but it is more agressive, and therefore the possibilities of issues increases.
