Has anyone had experience with ATI's HDTV component video adapters? I have heard that they don't work well and I was curious before I purchase one.

I know the adapter will put out 1080i, but what type of resolution in pixels does that give you?

What did we do before we had computers?

1080i is 1920x1080 interlaced.

The premium HDTV resolution is actually 720p, lower res at 1280x720 but it's progressive scan (non-interlaced).

Do you have an HDTV? Many come with a 15-pin Sub-D (identicle to VGA) or a DVI input. Using VGA, you need to set it at 60Hz, and 1280x768 should adjust down to 1280x720 using the driver utility. And DVI should already be 60Hz.

Make that 50Hz if you live in Europe/Australia/etc.

I do have an HDTV, but I had always heard and read that the DVI interface on the TV is not meant for PCs. I have the sony 34XBR800 TV and the manual states that it is not intended to be used with a PC. I was hesitant to even try it because of the excessive cost of the TV and the risk of damaging it.

I have also heard that the corners of the screen don't stay sinked up when you display PC on the TV.

Regardless, I will give it a try. Thanks for the help. I am still curious though if anyone has ever used one of the ATI HDTV component video adapters successfully.

The problem is, you don't want to set the resolution too high, nor the frequency at anything other than 60Hz.

The signal is the same as the component signal.

I connected my DVI slot of the vid card to the DVI of the TV and was able to see a picture on the display. My problem was that the display was locked at 720x480. The picture looked crisp and clear, but I could not change the resolution. Also, I lost a good section of the outside of my Windows desktop that was off of the screen. The ATI drivers did not allow me to move the screen or change the display.

I would have liked to have had it set to another resolution, but I couldn't figure it out. One of my games said I could change the resolution to 1920x540, but I could not get it to go.

Any other ideas or something I might have done wrong?

Wow, that would be a driver problem. I've just noticed that my current driver for my ATI card also doesn't include the height and width adjustments in advanced properties! And my previous driver did! I'm a little upset now!

OK, you could try a different driver, one with the needed adjustments for the VGA output. As for me, I'll try to figure it out too!
