Hi all,

I am getting a blue error screen everytime I close an application that I
installed on my machine running Windows XP. Specifically, the application is
the Sun One 5.2 Directory Server. When I close this application, a blue
screen appears telling me there is a problem with my ati3d1ag.dll file and
then automatically restarts.

At first, I suspected it was a problem with my ATI display driver, so I
uninstalled it and tried to install a new display driver, but it wouldn't let
me.
I'm running out of ideas on how to solve this problem now.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
Susan

What happened when you tried to install the updated graphics drivers?

Go to www.ati.com and find the uninstaller program (look in tools menu).
Also scour around there for a description of registry entries to delete
using regedit.exe (back up the registry first!!!). Follow ATI's uninstall
and reinstall directions to the letter. Unless you have a hardware or
compatibility problem this should clear it up for you.

P.S. Never, ever let Windows Update update your video software drivers.
Okay, I think in network applications this is not the rule. Others may have
a clearer definition of when to use WinUpdate for video drivers.

I downloaded the catalyst fix exe file from the ati website (ATI Driver
Catalyst Fix wxp-w2k-wme-catalyst-7200-7-962--012565c.exe). But when I tried
to install the catalyst driver, I got the following error: "INF Error:
Device Driver not found." and the installation stops there.

Hi namniar,

I cannot find on the ati website, the tools menu for the uninstaller
program. Also, how do I backup the registry entries and know which ones to
delete?

Thanks,
Susan

ATI's uninstaller is bundled into its drivers. Its listed as a component
under Add/Remove programs. If you have pre-catalyst drivers, then you
usually have to uninstall the driver and control panel app manually from
add/remove programs.

If not listed, here is an ATI utility:
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html

You should then be able to reboot & install the new drivers.

For business use (except CAD/3D stations), I often allow windows update to
download the videocard drivers. They are always WHQL certified. They don't
usually include the full OpenGL or DirectX implementations so games will
suffer significantly. But this is a business PC, so who cares.

Hi namniar,

My graphics card is Mobility Radeon 7500 and my OS is Win XP.

Also, what do I set so that Windows doesn't automatically update my driver
when the computer restarts.

Thanks!
Susan

If it's a Mobility ATI then you must download the drivers from the NOTEBOOK
manufacturer's website.

Susan,

Cari is correct. Drivers directly from ATI are only for add in cards.

I believe you can still use the links for cleaning out the old drivers.
Check with the manufacturer of your Laptop or Notebook first though..

Do you use ATI's Multimedia Centre, DVD codecs or ATI remote. If so use the
ATI - Software Uninstall Utility located in the Add or Remove Programs
folder, BEFORE removing the ATI drivers and driver cleanup utility.
