For the past two months since I got my new computer, I have been plagued by a dreaded issue that likes to recur whenever it feels like it.

Description
A problem with your hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

Now this isnt the first time ive had to experience this annoying error.
This is the 3rd time ive seen it in the span of 2 months.
The First time was Christmas and the day after, where it crashed because it felt like crashing.
This was temporaily fixed by reseating the ram.
The Second time was New Years day, same thing. Games and programs crashing, but with an addition of 2 BSODS with the stop code KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE.
This was temporarily fixed by exchanging the old pair of ram for a new pair.
And now we have the third time... Which is right now.

If you are curious about whats happening, heres the specifications of the computer thats having troubles with this error.
CPU - Ryzen 7 7700x
GPU - Rtx 3060 12 GB (ventus 3x)
Memory - 32 gb G Skill Flare X5 (16x2) clocked at DDR5-4800 (instability would occur at 6000)
Mobo - Asus Tuf Gaming B650 Plus Wifi
Storage - 120 GB Inland Professional Sata SSD (boot drive)
2 TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus

--What ive attempted so far--

  • Another Ram Reseating (no avail)
  • Tinkering around and bios and changing one setting that relates to ram voltage (no avail)
  • Restart restart restart (no avail)

--What i havent attempted--
- Anything that isnt ram related

In the past 2 incidents, usually doing something with the ram seemed to have temporarily fixed the issue, so im a bit confident this issue deals with ram.
I already did a ram replacement which solved the issue for a month and a half
This time, im assuming it may have something to do with the motherboard dimm slots.
If you guys have any advice on how to finally solve this error for good or any other ways to troubleshoot this issue, please share them with me!
i bought stray yesterday and i wanna play it in peace but cant lmao

When i have the time to, i will probably test each of the ram sticks and the ram slots to get more info on the issue.

this is unlikely to be caused by your system RAM.
This is a VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED

normally, you would disable any system CPU overclocking, remove any GPU overclocking. do not overclock the PCI bus in bios. make sure the cpu and gpu fans are working. I would set the gpu fan to full speed for the case of GPU overheating.

boot into bios and update the current version or change any setting and change it back and save the bios config and boot into windows.

update the cpu chipset drivers, update the current video drivers. disable any sound device that does not have a speaker connected to it.
if your motherboard has a realtek sound chip, be sure to update the driver to a version that is dated in 2020 or newer.

basically, update bios and drivers for your motherboard and retest (most common fix)

otherwise copy your minidump files to a server, share them for public access and post a link.

I think the video timeout is 2 seconds.

special case will require a kernel memory dump.
(certain power management bugs, device driver install failures, firmware bugs in ssd, ...)

I would not install asus armory crate.
TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI - Support (asus.com)
note updated bios has fixes for:
Improve GPU compatibility for GeForce RTX 40 series
often the updates are not listed in the bios fix list.

also: I guess i should note that you do not know if the video timeout was for the cpu gpu or for a add on gpu card.
amd cpu chipset update would fix internal GPU bugs.

note: your cpu was released Sep 27th, 2022
make sure you are running the bios

So far, i havent done any overclocking on the cpu or gpu.
Ill try with updating drivers and going into the bios when i have the time to do so.

To test your ram and eliminate it as the source of your problem,
Run memtest86 or memtest86+
They boot from a usb stick and do not use windows.
You can download them here:
If you can run a full pass with NO errors, your ram should be ok.

Running several more passes will sometimes uncover an issue, but it takes more time.
Probably not worth it unless you really suspect a ram issue.

What is the make/model of your psu?
3000 series graphics cards can have temporary high voltage spikes which not all power supplies can handle.
Your error indicates a gpu issue.

alright its been a bit
what seemed to have resolved the issue this time was turning core performance boost from auto to disabled.
seems like that may have caused some instability i guess? Idk
its been a week with that off and i havent had a crashing issue so far
the base clocks are still at 4 something ghz so its fine
problem resolved for the time being
