Yea they aint cheap, figure $200+ for a decent set of bookshelf speakers.
But to each their own. I run my sound from soundcard(Discrete of course) to my reciever where I have 4 5 1/2 100wt bookshelfs, a 100watt center and a 100w sub. Sounds great.

Some people are incapable of noticing the difference or are used to cheap speakers and dont like true neutral speakers.

Titans run 270 a pair, you don't need a sub with them at all. they repro up down in the range of 50 hz, and 200 for a low quality stereo reciever. A reciever is a good investment though, because a decent reciever can last you a good 15 years, sound technology does not accelerate like microchips or anything.

180 bucks for Harmon Kardon stereo refurbs on ebay.

200 will not buy you decent bookshelves at all. Although I think the cheapest pairs in the Performance series lineup which are very small and would make great computer speakers are about 200, and I suppose the 5 inch 2 way polk rear surround speakers would make good compact computer speakers. But those two pairs are sort of micro bookshelves.
