Approximate Purchase Date: Now-ish, since I'm having repeated crashing issues. I can wait a little if new releases seem likely to significantly affect pricing or what's worth buying.

Budget Range: I'd like to spend $2000 but I'm guessing I'll need to go up to $3000, particularly if I include a monitor in the budget.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, internet browsing, watching TV etc. The most demanding thing I will be doing is gaming. I typically play indie games, though am currently playing Overwatch 2 (would like 120fps for this) and have played some triple A titles recently like Dark Souls and It Takes Two. I guess I don't tend to stretch the capacity of my builds, but building something decent has meant it's lasted a long while. And who knows, maybe I'll get into new release triple A games if my computer can actually run them? I'd like this build to last as long as my current build (9 or so years).

Are you buying a monitor: Yes, see monitor resolution question for more info.

Parts to Upgrade: I would like to keep my case if I can (Fractal Design Define R5) as it looks clean and works well. I have a 256GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD and a Western Digital Black 2TB drive. I'm happy to reuse these, though it seems high capacity M2 drives are relatively affordable now, so perhaps it's better to use my current drives as storage only? I have the peripherals covered - mouse, keyboard, headphones etc. I have a PCIE Wifi card too (Archer T4E), so don't need Wifi included with the Motherboard, if that's even an option anymore. Everything else needs an upgrade.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes, I don't imagine my current copy of Windows will be transferable.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I'm located in Australia so Umart is good. I don't really have a preference, though.

Location: Sydney, Australia.

Parts Preferences: No brand preferences.

Overclocking: Maybe. I've never cared much about this before, and don't know how much this makes a difference to day-to-day computer use.

SLI or Crossfire: No. Is this really a thing anymore?

Your Monitor Resolution: I currently have 2 1080p monitors (Philips PHL246v5). I'm not against keeping these but I would like the primary gaming monitor to be 1440p 120fps. I would like to retain a multi-monitor setup.

Additional Comments: It seems like the sweet spot these days before diminishing returns is 1440p/120fps. I lost track of part releases a long time ago so I have no idea what's required for this, hence my broad budget range. I'd like to spend $2000 but I have no idea if that's feasible for what I want.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:
My current build is: i5-3330, 8GB ram, GTX 770. I... haven't upgraded in a while.
Ideally the new build would last as long as my current one has. I'm also having issues with my GPU malfunctioning. The crashes have gradually increased over the years to the point that it's quite frequent.

Let me know if I forgot anything!

Intel will release the less expensive locked cpu's along with the B760 DDR5 boards this coming January 3rd. Keep your eyes peeled on this site and others for the reviews of the i7 13700 / 13700F and the i5 13400 / 13400F. By then DDR5 will have fallen even more in price.

Thanks for your response!
Is it also worth waiting for the GTX 4070? Though, that might break the budget.

It seems the CPUs may have been worth waiting for, but the 4070TI seems overpriced to me - the cheapest option in Australia is $1450.

What would everyone recommend the build be, at this stage?

The B760 DDR5 boards haven't arrived in Oz yet which is not a big deal. Also that i5 13400F down below doesn't show up in PC PartPicker for Australia but I'm thinking you might find it elsewhere for cheaper. Just add a graphics card and yes this psu down below will run an RTX 4070 Ti.

If you can say one thing about my computer building decisions it's that they take forever.

I've put together a few draft options using some of the recommendations I've received here and elsewhere. I'd love for people to critique. My intent was to get the best combination I could out of my $3k max, based on what's available in Australia.

The DDR4 option has the 7900XT instead of the 4070TI as it seemed like the best use of the money I saved from downgrading from DDR5. The 7900XT seems to be a marginal performance increase though, so would DDR5 be a better choice?

I haven't put a CPU cooler in the i5 build because I've never had a problem with the stock coolers, unless this is likely to impact performance? I haven't noticed it in the past.

Finally, I intend to spend less on the monitor than that. I'm thinking the Gigabyte G27Q IPS which retails here for $399. It's the best value 1440p, 120hz+ IPS panel I've been able to find. That would give me some money in the budget to grab an M2 SSD.

With no further rambling here are the PCPartPicker lists:
Thanks in advance for any improvements you can make or flaws you find! 😀

Motherboard?

btw this Ryzen cpu runs cooler.

What about the motherboard? Is something wrong with one of them?

That's good to know regarding the Ryzen CPU. Do you have any opinion about the 13400 vs the AMD 7600?
It seems to me that the AMD option is marginally better value, particularly because it has better single core performance, which I've read is more relevant for gaming.
It's also cheaper, so it seems as if the Ryzen 5 build is the better of the two options.
The other difference is between the B650 and the Z690, and I have no real idea how to compare motherboards.

I see the board now. I clicked the wrong link the first time. =/ Your builds look fine ^^ DDR5 is definitely the future for sure. tbh both of those AMD / Intel DDR5 builds look good. As far as i5 vs i7 .. it comes down to budget tbh.

If you go with a Z690 or B660 board then look for a Gigabyte board so that you can use the Q-Flash Plus to update the bios for the 13 gen cpu's before you install the cpu.
