Awful perfomance after GPU swap

Hello everyone,

I bricked my GTX470 and got a HD6870 as a change. I swapped the cars, used DDU and deleted all the old drivers

So, I've installed the latest Crismson drivers for the AMD card.

The thing is, all my games run AWFUL

GTA V runs -5, -10 FPS less
ETS2 runs on high with 10 fps and on low 20fps (on GTX470 high 30-35 fps, low ~60 fps)
BF4 stuttering and 20-30FPS in rooms

The thing I saw is that in most games, my CPU runs at 100% and GPU ~50%

I'm not really sure is it bottleneck because the 470 and 6870 are almost the same. But there are bottleneck signs.

Specs:
Asus P5K SE
Q8200 2,33 x 4
4GB DDR2

What can I do, I'm out of ideas...

The 6870 is equivelent to a OC'd GTX460, and just a bit under the 470:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3987/amds-radeon-6870-6850-renewing-competition-in-the-midrange-market/21

But what you describe is not a GPU bottleneck but a CPU one. If the CPU is maxed and the GPU is at 50%, then the CPU is holding the GPU back. Maybe try OCing the CPU.

Might be a good idea to check your RAM usage as well, an upgrade to 8gb might be in order.

Edit: the latest crimson drivers do not support the 6870, unless you are referring to the one driver that they did and it was the first crimson driver they released. There have been no driver updates for the 6870 since. (I have a 6870 in my alt computer, the driver is from July)

Overclocking my CPU? Seems like a good way but I if i OC it, does it's price drop? I should really try it, never did it before...
Never had issues with RAM usage, but in games, mostly it shows ~3800MB used in most games
I have already installed 16.2.1 Crimson drivers.

Price drop? The performance and heat will go up, you will need a good cooler to OC it to any noticeable amount. The stock cooler wont do this, only very mild OC's on stock. The C2Q family of CPU's are notorious for great overclocking. I have a C2Q 9550 OC'd to 3.5ghz, at stock it was 2.83ghz. But that is with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo cooler on it. That is another possibility, upgrading the CPU to something like the Q9550 for ~$40 on eBay. It has 3x the on chip cache and a higher base clock speed. But it depends on if you want to put the money into it.

If you are getting that close to full on RAM, it's a good idea to upgrade, you are probably using a lot of the page file which is a lot slower than RAM. Another option would be to try "Windows ReadyBoost" which allows the computer to use a flash drive as RAM, though I don't know how much better than the standard page file, but it is faster to some extent. (4gb for 32-bit Windows, 8gb for 64-bit.)

You should try reverting back to the one I linked, however, you probably have the old driver but new version of Crimson.

Long time I am thinking about OCing my CPU, you gave me a idea about the cooler, seems nice, but the price for a cooler?? Anyways, getting the better CPU also seems to risky and expensive. Really not sure will it fix my issue. Also was thinking about getting a new mobo, cpu and DDR4 ram, still over my budget, and not really sure is DDR2 ram still worth that money (costs almost the same as DDR4). Using an USB stick as RAM? Could give it a try, but is the best solution?

After all of that, I made some points. Well, as AMD doesn't support Physx, so, to make Physx working, AMD has to put all of it's Physx load on the CPU, right? Because of that my CPU is working at 100%, which is unusal on my last Nvidia card, and the GPU at 50%. By OCing my CPU with an AMD card, seems a little bit risky, getting ~0.50 GHz out of it more, does not seem enough. I don't really know is this the issue, but I'll try to change the HD6870 with the GTX470 Point of View...

For the cooler:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=coolermaster%20hyper%20evo%20212&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36

There is one for $34.99 but has a $10 Mail in Rebate, there is another for $27.75.

Upgrading the CPU will help a little, but a decent OC will get you a fair performance boost. I just put that out there as a possibility.

As to upgrading the RAM, you can get some decent deals on eBay for some used RAM, buying it new isn't a good option, the prices are ridiculous. I picked up a 8gb kit (4 X 2gb) for about $40 on eBay and it's been going perfect for over a year now. Using ReadyBoost to supplement the RAM is not idea, but more of a stop gap. The best solution if to upgrade the RAM, but if you have a flash drive that is empty, give it a try and see if it helps. You can always stop using it like that and it will be a normal flash drive again, it doesn't modify it in any way, it basically just uses that instead of the page file that normally is on the HDD. The USB 2.0 or newer is a faster interface than a SATA HDD.

To get a noticeable performance boost from the CPU, you will want to get it as close to 3ghz as possible, but not all CPU's are capable of that so would just suggest getting the cooler, learn how to OC and see what you can get.

Yes, the CPU will end up handling all the Physics for games, but there are only a few games that include that. AMD will never support Physics as it's a proprietary thing from nVidia, unless nVidia opens the source code for free...I wouldn't hold my breath. The 470 was not a great deal faster than the 6870, but if you are running Physics games, you could try turning that off and see if things improve.

Thanks for all the info! Sadly, none of these companies ship to my place, right? Ebay doesn't also ship any near me...

I found a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO in my country for $35 and also 8 GB (2GBx4) for $30.

I may try ReadyBoost, but, I currently don't have any USBs free, lost my 4GB one and only one of 1GB is free.

I would 100% OC my CPU only if I get that cooler.

I would have never gotten an AMD card, if I knew the thing about Physx, I'm really planning to change the 6870 for an GTX470, because never had issues with the 470 and with the 6870 I do. I need to do it because I don't want to risk giving out cash for a cooler, if it's only the matter of the card.

What country are you in? Newegg ships to many countries worldwide. At the top of the website there is a flag and you can choose different countries/currencies there. For eBay, it depends on the seller, but some do ship worldwide.

For most people, myself included, physics is not a concern, there are so few programs/games that use it that when I choose a card, I don't even think about it. I know some like it, but it varies from person to person. If it's a priority for you, then an nVidia card suits your needs better. Many program developers don't use physics because it is nVidia exclusive and that might limit their customer base. Games that include it are usually ones the nVidia paid them to add it in.

I'm in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it's not listed on the top page (usually for this country..). And on eBay too, almost none ship to this place.

For me too, as I saw the list of games that use Physics, I saw that it is not a priority to me too, but, something simply makes a problem.

As the 470 and 6870 are almost the same (and the 6870 is "30%" "worse" than the 470) I still get issues, never had such on a Nvidia card. The 470 is stronger and still I may need to OC my CPU to get it fixed. Has no logic at all. None of the games I play are not listed on list of games that use Physx

Thanks for all of your info! :)
