B3D has two interesting blurbs on the future @ ATI

Beyond 3D, has two nice little bits from ATI's analysts day.

The firs bit was extolling the virtues of PCI-EX and ATI's leading position in that area:

The info was culled from this report by Research Capital;

The next (or more recent) article focuses on the expectations and strategy for the next gen. cards. The main point being that ATI will be willing to sacrifice margins in order to maintain the performance crown (similar to the situation that was the R9500/Pro).

<A HREF="http://www.beyond3d.com/#news8782" target="_new">http://www.beyond3d.com/#news8782</A>

Hoepfully this will translate beyond just the R42X and hopefully also include the RV380 (please, oh please).

Once again we have to wait and see.

Either the RV380 or the R42X, whichever PCI-EX card comes out soonest. If the RV380 isn't much cheaper than the R42X (420 or 423) but is significantly worse (like no VS/PS 3.0) then the R42X is the choice. I will see, but that's definitely my desire.

Also as long as the RV380 is significantly better than this R9600P(RV350), then it makes sense. IF it's not much better then some soul searching may need to be done. I definitely don't want to wait for the R450 to get my next card.

I also need a GOOD graphic on the Box to replace the EVIL GOALIE! :evil:

Well I for one am scared of pci-ex, because its another new technology. So these new cards that are suppost to be 2x faster than a 9700pro coming out early next year, are they going to be pci-ex because if they are, then I will have to buy a new mobo and a new cpu and thats gonna suck!

Speed, no new mobo (they come with an adapter which is one of the nice benifits of being an early adopter IMO [how long will those be availible?])

Now I'm going to buy a new mobo and cpu by that time anyway, I'm waiting for 939pin A64FX, and I want to get a laptop first. But by next Tax return season I should feel like getting a new setup I'm sure.

I'm not schtoopid, I won't waste my mone, but I'm not afraid of spending it either, if it appears to be worth it.
And as some may have noticed, I don't mind being an early adopter. I don't mind that it's new, just like I didn't mind with the R9600P when it came out, bought it first week.

Well it's hurry-up and wait time, so I'll just have to think of other things to spend my money on. New Boots and Skiis comes to mind. :wink:

An adapter for pci-ex to pci or AGP?

That's news to me(about the adapters)...maybe I shouldn't upgrade now then. Anyway, will there be any justification to running a 420, 380, 423 on 4xAGP (damned 850 chipset, makes me so mad)? Supposedly there is very little actual difference between 4x AGP and 8x AGP in terms of noticable speed (I've never seen any reviews about this, however), so would there be little difference between 4x AGP and PCI-EX (in noticable speed, of course)?

RDRAM = ENEMY

It'll be an adapter allowing the PCI-EX card to run in older AGP slots. Now this strategy may have changed with the concept of an R420 and an R423. But there has been no mention that this would be removed from the pci-ex package.

HERE's the article describing the RV380 as well as the PCI-EX to AGP 'bridge', there are others, but this should suffice;

<A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20030616162537.html" target="_new">http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20030616162537.html</A>

Makes it EXTREMELY attractive to me (especially as a potential conduit for multi-monitor suport [hey no one knows how this is going to work out with mobo support]). Yes I WILL be upgrading my mobo, and yes I WILL be looking to ensure that it has at least one PCI-EX slot, however I'd rather have the freedom that this part offers me. Expecially to swap it from my gaming rig to my video-editing rig for MO power should I feel it needs it, or once I upgrade to the R450/500 later.
I doubt after the first generation you will be getting this adapter shipped with your products. It's like those old AT to PS/2 keyboard adapters. Find me one now for less than $30, but I love using my original stainless steel IBM PC (the original) keyboard at work. Clack-Clack-Clack, love it!

Anywhoo that's my motivation.

I'm not sure. No one thinks that the 16X PIC-EX graphics bus will be NEEDED for a while either, it will likely take time to exploit properly. I'm sure the RV380 will work well on 4XAGP, wether or not the R42X will run as smoothly, I don't think anyone can really tell right now (except the ATI lab monkeys, my Monkey Brothas! :wink: ). Sure the R9800XT doesn't really stresss the 4x/8X divide (except MAYBE 1-2%), but we don't know enough about the next generation of cards and how they will act/react.

If there were to be any difference expect it to be in the 4XX class card, not the RV card, which is more barebone mainstream.

My interest is in what may be my mistaken conception that multi-monitor/card solutions make work well with the new format.

I think if ATI is market savy they will make these cards AT LEAST match the R9600P's requirements. 4X AGP isn't too much to ask for from consumers (as you can attest to), but asking that every have at least 8X agp (especially when there isn't burning reason right now) seems like expecting a little much from consumers. Although I also don't want people to complain about it if they do decide to go the 8X only route. Seriously I feel for you if that's the case, but let's be serious, if we all want to be on the bleeding edge of technology, we defintiely need to pay for it and stay 'on the bleeding edge'.

Hopefully we will know more by X-mas (hopefully the same can be said about UT2K4, D]|[ , HL2 , and MahjongTetrisSupremeUltraTournamentArenaExtreme2004-SpecialEdition.

Do you have time frame when they will be released?
Sometime early 2004. Not sure if that would be end of Q1 or beginning of Q2. At least that's what the buzz is. Who knows, I think it really depends on the release schedule of the NV40.

I expect the R42X to hit the market first, followed by the RV380 a little later (following past convention, and allowing 2 different releases for PR).
