Backing up my files

hi there,i need some assistance,i am trying to backup my files on W7 64bit home premium,when i run (BACKUP NOW)it starts to run,but the loading bar stays at approx 10percent and does not progress,it stays like this for hours and will not seem to complete this process,i am backing up to my portable 600gig samsung drive..im not sure how to fix this problem...thanks

Windows doesn't have the best backup software, you might want to use a free third party solution.

i want to backup most of my programme files(e.g. games)so i can restore them after i reformat and reinstall windows 7.i am trying another programme called...EaseUS Todo Backup Free 4.0 to backup but not sure if i can restore with it after i reistall windows

cant you just backup the save games and then paste them in the correct place after reinstall

the only game i ever had an issue doing this was batman arkham city--it just wont let you do it

not sure you can backup and restore program files as they are all over the registry and loads of other places not just in c/ program files or program files x86 on 64bit

may be wrong though as its 6-30am here and my brain is going on strike now

i dont think i can do that,most of my games are connected to my steam account and need to be downloaded,im tryin to avoid the large download by restoring then if i can,thanks for the help,i will think it over

Steam has a built in back-up system.

Open steam and click the "Steam" (located at the top right corner)
Select "Backup and Restore Games"
Select "Backup currently installed games" and click next
Tick the boxes next to the games you want to install and click next
Choose your destination and click next

i am backing up the steam games now to my portable hard drive,im unsure how to restore them after i reformat and reinstall windows..thanks for your help

It is a similar process to re-install them, on the third step instead of choosing back up just select restore and point it to the file location.

Important:
Backups for Valve games created with this feature will not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps or configuration files. To backup your entire installation (including custom content), ensure that copies of all custom files are in the following folders in the path: C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\<username>\<game name>\<abbreviated game name>\ :

You should test your back ups just in case.

i unistalled 1 game after i backed up the game(as a test example)files to a portable drive,when i go back to my steam games library i cant find any option to restore the game files,i think i need to burn the files to a disc but i cant find any info on that in steam,i think i have had this problem before,its very annoying steam...any idea"s

Okay you don't restore the game from the game library.

The first part is like when you were backing up:
1. Open steam and click the "Steam" (located at the top right corner)
2. Select "Backup and Restore Games"

The next part is different
3. Select the 2nd option (Restore)
4. Select the location on the external drive that you used when you backed it up.

.:Edit:. I found a simpler way to restore the back ups.

Just go to the back up folder and open it (If you have multiple disks open Disk_1)
- Run the "steambackup" application and choose the first option (Restore <name> backup)
