Hello community,

After a clean install and all the programs i need/ want loaded, the Backup and Restore functions of Windows no longer work.

This hasn't happened any other time, except with this particular install of Windows, but i can't for the life of me find how to fix it from googling for a solution.

[i did find something that had to do with context menus from 3rd party programs making it not work, but it doesn't seem to apply to me as i don't usually use programs that alter context menus (except for winrar and adobe) i have also run MSE and Spybot (spybot doesn't matter much i know) and checked the integrity of windows system files (which turned out fine)]

When i open control panel, open system and security, and find the backup and restore panel with such options as "backup your computer" and restore files" - or - search for backup and restore from the start menu, what happens is it does not respond at all to me clicking on it - zero response except for a micro second (hardly noticeable) of a loading curser the first time only, then nothing.

I have also checked if the service is running after i click "backup and restore" it isn't, but even if i start it manually and try again, still nothing.

My rig is in my sig, computer is updated to the best of my knowledge and here is a list of the programs that i have installed:

I would appreciate any input you all can give, because i feel unsafe without the capability of making regular backups

Thank you Tom's Community (and sorry about the huge looking block of text for the soft info),

Solution
In my case it was because I used Acronis True Image Home 2011 for a while.

After un installing this product the CPL links where broken. I tryed serveral fixes wich I have found on other forums, but to no avail.

Until I found this link http://kb.acronis.com/content/14741 and i seems this Acronis tool intergrates with windows 7 Backup and Restore and this is a known error when uninstalling this product.

If you use or used this program, then this is the solution.

Hope this helps!
When you say they "don't work", what specifically is it that's giving you a problem?

Can you not find the link to the program?

When you click the link, does it simply not run? Or does it run and give you an error message? If so, what's the message?

I apologize for not clarifying, when i open control panel, open system and security, and find the backup and restore panel with such options as "backup your computer" and restore files" - or - search for backup and restore from the start menu, what happens is it does not respond at all to me clicking on it - zero response except for a micro second (hardly noticeable) of a loading curser the first time only, then nothing.

When I look at the properties of the Backup and Restore link in the Start menu, the command line used to start Backup and Restore is:

%SystemRoot%\System32\control.exe /name Microsoft.BackupAndRestore

If you open up a Command Prompt window and paste that command into it, what happens?

The properties says the same thing over here, but when i run it in cmd it does the same thing as it would if i clicked on it.

I wonder if there is a way to run this function of the control panel directly (more-so than a shortcut with commands)

I may just have to use my second hard drive to make a fresh install, and move all my files/ save games/ settings... over... ugh.

It seems like its missing from windows altogether. Is there a way to reinstall backup and restore? I looked for it in the windows feature add remove... but i didn't see it.

Yeah, but as you see in my sig, i am running ult - so its there - and i've used it before.

Unless anyone can help remedy this, i'll have to make a new os disk - transfer stuff then move the partitions back to my main drive...

Thank you very much for offering troubleshooting tips that i wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

I also have this problem - and probably got it from using and uninstaling Acronis True Image. But when I try to solution suggested I get a message from the Registry Editor "Cannot import. Not all data wa successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes" How can I run the fix?

Well I've been working with Acronis for several months on this and have gotton nowhere. I upraded to Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 from True Image Home 11 and it has been nothing but a nightmare. Acronis does work and Windows 7 Backup Works, BUT I can't get Windows Backup to STOP nor can I do anything with it. Acronis' suggestion was to reload Windows 7 - great idea after 18 months of updates and software installs. What I find so utterly unbeliveable is that there is not a way to run Windows 7 backup from a command line. We use Acronis in our office as well (VM Cloud) - nothing but trouble there too.

I nevr got a solution. For me, installing Acronis True Image was the worst thing I ever did, the consequences hitting like a virus. It seems to have permanently broken Windows 7 backup. Or at least it seems to run weekly, but I have no control over it, and no confidece that I could restore from it.

I got as far as step 7, where I get the message "Registry Editor: Cannot import C:\users\\\\\Fix_W7BackupKeys.reg Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes" Any ideas?

Try this:
Select Start - Help and Support
Enter StartUp Enter (sorry if startup is the wrong word. I translate from Norwegian language, but it easy, find the startup option)
Choose Run Selective Startup using System Configuration
Click to open the System Configuration Utility.
Select services.
Check that the Windows Backup is ON - Markd
If not - click in the empty box to turn on.
OK Enter
OK Restart the computer.
Now the windowvs Backup / Restore function after startup.
:-D
