Backup skill for FO sorceress

I've got my FO sorceress up to lvl 50 now and I have 20 skill points left
to spare. So where to put them? So far I've had all my FO sorcs use meteor
as a backup and I've been happy about it. But what are the viable
alternatives for that?

I guess the ones I've seen/read about are:
- fireball
- chain lightning
- lightning

Any comments on this? Since I'm playing HC, I've enjoyed the limited stand-
off capability of the meteor, meaning that the fire keeps burning in the
ground for a while so if I don't hit the badguys right in the head, they
still get some damage from the fire.

I guess hydra is out of the question, or? I remember calculating the damage
for maxed hydra and fire mastery and it wasn't that impressive :)

Suggestions?

I've historically gone with chainlightning/lightning, because I like to
be able to solo the game, and one of the councilmembers in hell is
always fire/cold immune (whereas Lord de Seis is only sometimes
lightning/cold immune). It's also better for pit running, because it
autotargets subsequent monsters after you've hit the first.

In any event, you'll be maxing meteor+fireball or
chainlightning+lightning so you get the synergy benefits.

I use a fireball/frozen orb sorc. Seems to be a great combo. Make sure have
static and tele. Or could go with orb/lightning sorc, seems to just as
viable.
fireball/frozen orb does handle most situations though, along with a good
merc. with fireball you have meteor and fire bolt as synergies and of course
fire mastery, i think lightning you have more synergies. So, fireball might
be a cheaper option for skill points.
just my opinion though.

Good Luck.

Umm, why would I max fireball and meteor for the fire side, if I want to
use fireball? Why not just max fireball and firebolt and avoid the left
side of the tree (inferno, blaze, firewall) completely? That will save me 4
points to spare for firebolt and fire mastery.

I read some guides about hydra sorcs being possible in PvP, so I'm
wondering if hydra could be a viable backup, afterall... Hmm, maybe I'll
just have to give it a try in single player with a character editor and see
for myself.

I got a SC FO/Hydra sorc which is able to do Hell Baal with about 350%
MF. So the FO/Hydra build seems viable. One thing you can't do with a
FO/Hydra sorc is the Pit. The mix of fire and cold imunes is to much to
handle, as in the worst case your hydra will always fire at the fire
imunes. But you can go to the Ancient Tunnels in Act2 Lost City to do
lvl85 farming.
