Question Bad CPU - Help me pick a new one for 4 year old build

I've been having issues with this build for the four years I've owned it. Lots of BSODs, etc. I suspected it was the GPU and had eventually tested everything but the CPU and GPU. I got the chance last week to try a 5600G and the system worked great. I tested it for a few days and put my GPU back in expecting it to start crashing but nothing... still ran great.

Last night I put the CPU (3600) back in and it started crashing again. So its either the CPU has been bad from the beginning or doesn't play nicely with my MB and/or GPU? I'm thinking the CPU is bad so I'm going to order a new one.

This build is four years old and still is fast when it is not crashing. What should I get? I don't know if I should just get another 3600 because it is cheap or upgrade and get even more years out of this build.

What BIOS version are you currently on for your motherboard? You should be good to go with pretty much any Ryzen 5000 series processor. I'd look into a Ryzen 5 5600x or higher but make sure you're on the latest BIOS version.

I agree with what Lutfij said. Install your old cpu, install the latest bios and then buy a 5600x/5800x/5800x3d/5900x/5950x depending on your budget in that order.

Thanks all... I'm on the latest version. I had to do that to get the 5600G to work.

Should I upgrade anything else since this is a decent step up or will my hardware not bottleneck the new CPU?

If you do only gaming then 5800X3D is the best, if you also do video editing or other cpu intensive tasks then 5900x or 5950X
