Bad fps rates in multiplayer gaming

So I have been trying to fix this problem for a while now and I'm not sure what to do. My system runs smoothly when playing solo or campaign but gets horrible fps in multiplayer. I have the intel core i5 2500 cpu (non k) and a gtx 1050 ti gpu, I know these are not the best out there but I have seen many videos with my same setup and it plays fine in multiplayer gaming. I was told it has nothing to do with my connection and that there is something taxing my cpu that shouldn't be. Any suggestions on what to do are greatly appreciated and if you need more info just let me know.

SETUP:
psu - 450 watt evga bronze
cpu - intel core i5 2500 (non k)
gpu - gtx 1050 ti
RAM - 8 gigs
I'm not too sure what MOBO I have

What game are you playing? Multiplayer tends to be more CPU intensive than single player campaigns, especially if the game you're playing has high player counts per server. If it's something like Battlefield 1 which gets very CPU heavy clon the 64 player multiplayer maps, then you may be CPU bottlenecked, as that game needs more than 4 CPU threads or at minimum a very high ocked 4 core/4 thread CPU to hold 60FPS.

I do play BF1 and some rocket league, and Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and overwatch.
so is my only option a new cpu?
I feel like it should still be performing better than it is

The i5 2500 is 7 years old now, and it's now finally starting to show its age in some of the newer games. The 2500k is still decent for gaming due to overclocking ability, but at stock clocks the Sandy Bridge i5s are starting to get a bit slow on newer CPU heavy games.

its just weird though cuz I see videos of people with the same setup and it seems to run smooth
