Microsoft needs to chase mobile and other and other interesting tech - no problem with that. However, under Ballmer Microsoft dropped the other ball and almost totally abandoned its PC user base.

How anyone could possibly think it is OK to inflict upon customers the blurry grey-scale font rendering in IE11 and all of Office 2013 is beyond comprehension.

Windows 8.1 can has all the bells and whistles but it continues to assault users' eyesight with blurry, headache-inducing text. Such a fundamental oversight is extremely bizarre and represents a spectacular failure.

Outdated info... sure, Windows is on 90% of all desktops. But this is not 2006. This is then end of 2013... where about 150m PC desktops/notebooks will be sold this year... compared to about 800m smart phones and tablets in which Android is about 60% and iOS is around 35%.

People are replacing their desktops with tablets and phones. At this point, MS-OS devices is about 20% market share. Why you think they panicked and made the crappy Win8 UI? Trying to get people to BUY Windows Phones because the UI matches the desktop.

My wife has a work notebook (I installed Linux on it) but spends 95% of her facebook/internet time with her Android phone. Even 30% of my posts here are from my phone.

Only companies are buying PCs... to run MS-Office, nothing much more than that. For home use... who cares? For gaming, get a console.... so with that in mind, who needs MS-Windows?

Microsoft *IS* about to collapse. Why do you think they are making MS-Office for Android and iOS for? Its the only thing that'll continue to make them money.

LOL! That's funny! MS isn't a software gaming company. PC gaming is in the dumps. Sell xBox to who? MS helped to kill PC gaming, they do it every day... what makes you think they're going to change?

Proof: Where is Gears of War 2 and 3 for PC? (I love gears 1, on my PC). Where are the HALO 3 and new games for PC? Oh, there isn't.

MS has thrown PC gaming into the garbage, which is another reason I WILL NOT buy an xbox, ever.

PC gaming is not actually in the dumps - Valve is doing nicely. The issue with Halo is it is owned by Microsoft - they limit the game to XBox so the only way to play is to buy an Xbox . . . . however as much as I liked the first Halo I will not purchase an Xbox . . . . so Microsoft won't get revenues either from the console or the game from me.

Valve is doing very good for the PC, they do things right (once they worked out their kinks). But still... the amount of AAA titles that are sold on PC on Steam is chump change compared to console sales. Remember when GTA for PC meant getting better graphics and more game...? Now its very late and more buggy.
Look at it this way, they pissed their pants that they sent 200,000 copies... eventually hitting 1m in a year for a dinky $1~2 game. Many people spend the most on Steam when they have a $5 sales (I got Portal 2 on the cheap that way). Meanwhile, a typical PS/Xbox game will easily sell in the MILLIONS.

MS makes more than just HALO. PC games don't compete against consoles... yet MS is such a "big supporter" of Games for Windows that they don't actually make the games people would buy for Windows... gotta get an xbox. Which in turns means... less reason to have a PC.

Its business... for most companies. I prefer the shooters on PC, the fight and race games on consoles. And yes, there is piracy on both consoles and PC... but when numbers look typically like this:

PS3/360 = 25m sales with thousands of pirate copies vs.
PC = 100,000 sales with 2 million pirate copies.

It sucks the life out of the developers... and of course, they usually do PPP games (Piss Poor Port) so that $500 2013 GeForce video card looks no better than a 2004 360 playing the same game title.

So far, the only areas where PC does very well is with MMOs and games that take a long time to play with lots of horse power.

Microsoft has the same problem that Washington DC has. They don't listen to business or the general public. If Microsoft doesn't sell what they want they will go buy a tablet from some other source with some other OS. Microsoft is just mad that they are losing some of their Monopoly power. The only think keeping Microsoft going is all those business clients that want PC's, and Laptops. So they go our and make their big business clients mad by turning windows into an OS for Tablets only. Cant fix Stupid.
