I have been into hardware now for about 3 years, and IMO in this time we have a few contenders in the GPU and CPU Bang for buck category,

GPU.
Ti 4200 64 Meg
Radeon 9500 Pro

CPU
XP1700 (Thoroughbred-Extreme overclocker)
Barton 2500(Fantastic value even at stock speed)

And the worst........

GPU
FX5800 Ultra(And the Aircraft fan)
Voodoo 5(I think it was-the last one)

Anyone got any ive missed out?

Of the ones you can still buy, then the R9600Pro needs to be there too. Availible for about $120US, even when compared to the R9800non-pro it's a damn good deal. The GF4 is another good choice you've already listed. And then under that an R9100 64mb for the very cheap/bottom.

But that's just MY opinion.

The 9500Pro is hardly ever advertised on Ebay by anyone-which i take to mean that those that have it are very satisfied(I have had 2-but as i like to swap and change and test and benchmark etc thats no surprise).

The Top end prices are ,as usual, ridiculous-the new Asus 9800xt coming in at £420(English pounds)-i think you can get a system 80% as fast for perhaps only half the cost.

An example being the current CPU king IMO the P4 3.2G EE, which retails at around £500-My Barton when overclocked is probably around about 80% as fast yet cost only £70!.

No one wants to go back to the days of snail paced development-but at the same time do we really need 256Meg of ram on our graphics cards(For ,at best, a minimal performance gain).

With this in mind i am currently setting up a website dedicated to the best value products, which i hope, will be of some interest to some of us.

Extremetech does a review every once an a while about $/fps. It's been a while (about 3+ months) bu their last one they had the R9600P way out in front, but the top of the line Radeon (can't remember if it was an R9800 or R9700) was runner-up. They use a range of benchmarks and then compare current MSRPs with all the major cards. I don't think they had non-pros though, so there's another level that can be added. Also overclockability should be included. Because OC'd the R9600P (if it's got all the right stuff) get some really nice overclocks and makes it an even better deal that at stock speeds.
