Betcha corporate buyers will be paying more attention to the bottom line than they used to (re total cost). At least at the big corps.

If someone (i.e., AMD) can sell them the value in it, maybe. But the energy bill doesn't usually go by purchasing's desk, if u know what i mean. Most servers come out of a company's CapEx. Though, it depends on the business. Some businesses will take it out of operational costs (like server farms). I can tell you with 100% certainty the US govt doesn't give a rats arse how much power their servers consume... i'm a product of that environment.

I definitely believe there's value to low wattage processors... just saying not everyone sees it that way. ;-)

I think what is different now than in the past is how AMD has succeeded in making a big deal of out energy cost, and so total cost is now thought about in a lot of places that didn't account for energy cost before. But this is true more for really large customers of course.

I totally agree. I don't think my work is very concerned with how much power our servers are sucking up. They might be concerned with heat though and thus indirectly with power.

It doesn't work that way sometimes. In most corporate environments, corporate buyer drones typically have the final say so... and they usually don't have all the facts (such as the energy bill!). They see a low priced OEM offer from Dell or HP w/ great performance and buy it.

That's what I mean about power consumption not being such a big issue... the people who care don't matter. That's not universally true, but it's certainly been my experience.

*shrugs*

Let's not forget the all-powerful kickback.

"If you buy your 35 new PC's from us, we'll send this shiny new XPS to your home address!"

The IT guy making 45k/year could care less about AMD, Intel, power consumption or reliability.

I still think AMD has a fighting chance (A good one, no less) if they release their full line of chips with unlocked multipliers. If it takes Penryn blow-for-blow, or even performs a little less, but has unlocked multipliers across its product line, AMD could easily take the crown back this round.

Watching this with interest ...

It is clear that posting here lowers your IQ ... the more you post ... you get it right?

What hole did Baron Matrix crawl out of ??

Double posted as well ... Noob !!

however, the timing is such that most or all of the planned acceptances, and associated revenue recognition, will likely be deferred until early 2008

Welcome to purchase and sales of capital goods in the post-Sarbanes-Oxley world.

When you buy a PC you pay for it first then take it home and find out if it works as you expect. Repeat: you do not get to take possession of your PC until you have paid for it. The seller has your money, you have some kind of machine. Who knows whether it will live up to your expectations.

Acquiring a Cray is very different. The buyer always writes acceptance criteria into the purchase agreement. Things like must be installed, fully operational and meet certain SLAs (Service Level Agreements, similar to a contractual MTBF). Accounting rules now strictly prohibit revenue recognition until every acceptance criterion has been satisfied.

Cray's statement is simply pointing out that while they mostly likely will be delivering machines over the course of the fall the associated revenue will not show up on their balance sheet until sometime next year.

What I think everyone has missed is that Cray is using BUDAPEST, not BARCELONA in these machines. Budapest was always due after 2P/4P.

From the Reg:

We're told that the XT4 boxes rely on the lower-end 1000 Series four-core chips code-named Budapest, which AMD has said will ship in the second half of 2007. The rest of the world is most excited about the higher-end four-core parts dubbed Barcelona, which are set to ship by mid-year.

Yep, here is a quote from AMD:

Phil Hughes, a spokesman at AMD, said Barcelona is still scheduled to launch in the summer, which is in line with the company's previous target. The spokesman said the component Cray was referring to was its Budapest chip, which will come out in the second half of the year following the Barcelona launch.

BaronSpeak:

A couple = 2 to 8
Actually in BaronSpeak a couple = him + his hand.

You think this is why GODJO is no longer with us?

This kind of thing is why I act the way I do.

I'm reasonably sure this kind of thing happens BECAUSE you act the way you do. But I can see how you might get that backwards.....

Exactly.

And Baron, as for the "poor me, poor me" argument, let me draw your attention to this:
What would be funny is me stomping your face in talking about my deceased mother, you cancerous growth.

Yeah... you poor thing. I don't know why people are so mean to you! It's hard to figure out! All you want to do is talk about CPUs!
