What is the differences with these hard drives, is it really worth the extra money. How is this any more special to the regular one?

Honestly, don't get either. Stick with HGST or Toshiba brand hard drives. Maybe WD if you get a really good deal.

Seagate has made some really stupid moves as of late. Not only has their quality been terrible (just google ST3000DM001 class action lawsuit) but they've been specifically implementing designs that prevent data recovery in the event the drive has even a minor failure. All of their newer drives are terminal locked, so only their data recovery service can work on them. So they want to sell you the junk drive, then force you to pay them to recover the data when what they sold you inevitably fails.

Avoid Seagate, they're a company who's hopefully going to fail and close up soon.

Can you link me a good 2tb hard drive please. Also just to make sure, you said WD is the best brand for hard drives?

No, I absolutely did not say that WD is the best brand. I specifically recommended HGST or Toshiba. WD is OK, but not quite as good as those other two. It really doesn't matter that much which model you go with among HGST or Toshiba drives, they're all quite good. If you're looking for a 3.5" drive, just get anything HGST you find. For 2.5" stick with Toshiba. Neither brand really has any recent foul drives.

Soooo, maybe a rethink on your recommendation if WD is only "Ok"?

WD now owns HGST but they are still built completely separate from the regular WD drives and using totally different architecture. HGST used to be called Hitachi (Hitach Global Storage Technologies = HGST) but they can't use the Hitachi name since WD bought them. Granted, there has been some branding crossover lately but they are generally totally different designs. WD seems to be moving more toward marketing the HGST built drives toward the enterprise market since even they know they are more reliable.

It's just like how Ford owns Land Rover, but that doesn't mean a Ford is a Land Rover or necessarily make a Land Rover a Ford.

Trust me, I spend every day of my life fixing these to recover data from them. They are different on many levels.

But Ford doesn't own Land Rover... they sold the brand to Tata Motors in 2008.
Apart from that, is Ultrastar better than Deskstar for a workstation type PC? More reliable? And what about WD Red, wher do they fit in the hierachy of goodness>
