Since posting this issue has gone away after several reboots and my desktop is once more stable.
This is a Windows 10 Professional installation on Gigabyte motherboard, 2.7hz I5-6400 processor 8GB RAM.
I believe this associated with Win 10 update KB4058258 (OS Build 16299.214) installed on that day.
