Based on my hardware, should I go 32 or 64 bit?

Hi everyone,

I have a 6yr old desktop I want to put Windows 7 on and was wondering if its worth going with 64 bit or not. I have the following:

Intel 945GC motherboard
Pentium D 820 processor
3gb ram 667mhz
Integrated graphics/sound
7200 rpm sata drive

I have no intention of upgrading this hardware, so is 32 bit more suited? I think most of my apps will do 64, but going 32 will ensure I'll be ok.

In terms of encoding etc with the above hardware, would I even notice a difference between platforms?

In terms of a setup like yours. There's a diminutive difference in performance levels. I reccommend 32 bit because of the support for applications. Although it's possible to run 32 bit applications on a 64 bit OS, it's slower than simply using a 32 bit OS. If you're absolutely positive about not upgrading your system at all, then 32 bit. 64 bit is only really useful for adressing more than 3gb ram.

You must go to 64bit if you have 4GB or more.. I recommend at least 6GB.. I use 32bit even i have 4gigs.. So good to stay in 32bit..

^^ Agreed- 32 bit is the way to go for your hardware also considering you are not upgrading soon.

pointless going 64 bit on that system, pointless running anything other than win7 basic either... in fact that system would work best with windows xp as your more likely to get the drivers for the hardware...

Thanks everyone. One more point Hey I had heard that 64bit is more "secure", that was one of the reasons I was considering it.
