Just want to edit 4K footage from a Sony FDR-AX1 4K camcorder using Sony Vegas Pro 12 which came with the camera. Any thoughts on building a budget system from scratch to edit and someday use a 4K monitor? Have a 2560 x 1440 monitor now. Don't do any gaming at all, just video editing in 4K now in place of HD for personal use.

Solution
u did select one yesterday someone unselected it lol, er choose whoever u find helped u the most.

😉 also if u require more help i am there.

Ya iceclock thats a good system its close to mine - I have a AMD FX 9500 CPU. My only suggestion, if your able to, is speed up the ram to 1800 or 2100 for video editing. It helps speed up the buffer speed.

good remark :)

with 16 gigs of ddr3 2133mhz

So when you guys do a build like what you have been showing me do you really order all the parts from the different suppliers? Or one could get Frys electronics to just price match if they have the item in stock.

wshinn,

My son was telling me the same thing about using windows 8 for editing, though I haven't been one that cares for it after spending a bit of time on my wife's pc with windows 8.

Are you going to be editing 4k video with your new editing system? If so I would be interested in what you selected.

iceclock: I really appreciate you taking the time for all the different builds you have posted. Hoping to get started by this weekend with my system.......might just spurge for the GeForce GTX 780 Ti video card.😀

voila ;D

Yes I shoot with a canon 1D and capture everything at 4k. The depth of field at 4k is awesome. However, everything is down-ressed because the technology lagging behind the consumer world.

This will enable you to edit at 4k and render everything very quickly. This setup will also allow you to work with the Adobe CC line very effectively, including using the Red Giant suite in AE. By the way youll need atleast an 800W PSU for this.

I am also recommending an NAS array along with another HDD to accompany the SDD.

You'll need an 800W PSU if you choose SLI*

Check out the Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB. A bit slower @ 5900 rpm, but a great price. Got nice review in Tom's that you can read.

Can you recommend info about the workstation vs "gaming" GPU's? My looking seems to show that workstation GPUs seem to fit into two categories: Quite inexpensive and scary costly. How useful are the lower end ones, and for a few more dollars would a high end gaming GPU (i.e. gtx780) provide the video editing type graphics needs for AfterEffects, etc?
As you can tell, I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my brain around this issue.
Thanks

That was mentioned earlier in the thread, and the quadro cards are very expensive. I'll find out soon if the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked 3GB Video Card will handle the work load from my Sony FDR-AX1 4K camcorder. I'm sure my son will do some gaming on it, maybe I'll get some interest in pc gaming having a good setup.

wshinn, Thanks for sharing your setup. Full frame 4K is fantastic I would imagine with your Canon 1D!

I never selected an answer. Which one did you want me to select? I don't think I will use every item listed so thats why I never selected a best answer.

Maybe my son selected it and then unselected it. Will have to ask him.

Obivously he's going with the xeon build now that you mention it 😍
