Just want to edit 4K footage from a Sony FDR-AX1 4K camcorder using Sony Vegas Pro 12 which came with the camera. Any thoughts on building a budget system from scratch to edit and someday use a 4K monitor? Have a 2560 x 1440 monitor now. Don't do any gaming at all, just video editing in 4K now in place of HD for personal use.

Solution
u did select one yesterday someone unselected it lol, er choose whoever u find helped u the most.

😉 also if u require more help i am there.

Just sold an old truck so might go over the $1500 now. Will be going with the i7 and the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked 3GB Video Card for sure. Will hopefully have the rest figured out by the weekend and start getting it sent my way.

Okay finally here is what I ended up with:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL8 Desktop Memory Kit
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD and I already have 4TB Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Dual Classified w/ EVGA ACX Cooler
Case: Corsair Carbide Series 400R Mid-Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Already Have
Operating System: Already Have

Right around $2K for all the above....just had to have the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Dual Classified card:)

Should have everything here by today.

Thanks for all the tips and iceclock gets a special mention for all his time.:)

iceclock: already have the RM 850W in the case.....will keep my fingers crossed on its quality. Great reviews for the RM 850W on Newegg. Time will tell as always with all of these parts.

wshinn: The 780 Ti Classified just showed up last night and that sucker is a beast in size! My son should get the build done today.

I would Recommend having a LARGER budget because 4K Right now is Expensive and You will need a Whole lat of Storage Space and Super fast SSDs in RAID 0 none the less... And a Dual GPU setup would be ideal Preferably AMD sice Vegas Pro is OpenCL heavy and NVidia cards suck with OpenCL plus the AMD card are cheaper.. $2500 should be a very good spot. But 3K would be Ideal at this point in time.. I'd Suggest:
Intel 4770K,
Asus Maximus VI Hero Motherboard (Has best Audio and Relability)
16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 1600mhz RAM,
1 Samsung 840 Pro SSD for Applications
2 Kingston Hyper X 3k 120GB SSDs (Which should be put in Raid 0 and used as Scratch disk for editing and Rendering Purposes because you need at least 900mb/s Read and Write to stream 4K in realtime),
3 3TB WD RED drives in RAID 5 for Storage of projects (RAID 5 allows for 1 drive to fail but the failed drive should be replaced with a drive of same capacity ASAP)
Asus R9 280X,
Fractal Define R4,
Corsair H80i CPU cooler
and a Corsair RM850 Power Supply..

It's a bit expensive but All 4k setups have to be because it's a very taxing Format.. Hope I helped

Thanks for your thoughts, though its way past when I pulled the trigger on my setup. 😉

Its been fantastic! I'm still shooting in 4K with the Sony AX100 and use Sony Vegas Pro 12 for the 4K video editing. Renders very well and with speed. My son uses it for gaming and it works great. It only slows down when he pushes all the settings in 4K and higher frame rates. Very glad this system has been rock solid for a year now.:)

Awesome man!! Glad to hear it's doing so well! I was second guessing myself thinking I should of gone with the new 6 core 5820k, but it looks like I made the best economical choice!

I use Sony Vegas Pro 12 for the 4K, and use Corel Videostudio Pro X7 also. With Vegas Pro 12 I also use the plug in "Twixtor" for super slo mo effects. Waiting for a 4K camera that will do 60 fps this year at a reasonable price. The Sony AX100 is great at 4K but won't do more than 30fps and I shoot alot of fast moving sports.

Here is something I shot recently in 4K. If you are a member of Vimeo you can download the 4K clip to view.

Thought I would check in again being the OP. System has held up very well. Added a Samsung NX1 for shooting 4K to go along with the Sony AX100 also shooting in 4K as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Can't believe it has been two years already! Really haven't had any major issues at all. My son got a 4K monitor this last Christmas, and has been gaming with this rig and seems to be pretty happy with it. He has all the technical experience for 4K gaming and I do the 4K shooting and then edit with this setup.

Glad to hear it!
