im building a new pc for my dad. His IBM Thinkpad A 31 just died (guess it would be 3-4 years old now, it has weird freezes and similar (I looked for all possible sources of non hardware error, its no good: its dead and i'm not goin to replace hardware inside a stuffed notebook)) (1.6 GHz P4m, 0.5 GB RAM, integrated ATI gfx, ...) and in the last jear was unhappy that it was very noticably slower than my pc (p4 3.2 GHz, 1 GB ram, geforce fx 5200, full of crap, ... 🙁 and yes i know its old and outdated, but i can still play everything with it)

I am however im not really sure about the gfx card. He doesnt really use his pc for anything but Word, Outlook, firefox and maybe some internet radio.

He does want this pc to be vista ready (just run it with all bells and whistles, not any gaming required at all (he usually makes me delete the standard windows games 😀 ), ie. no need for dx 10). im just going to install it on his pc when i get my copy in 2007 or 08 or whenever it will finally come out.

i was thinking along the lines of a geforce 7300 but i realise this might not be a good choice (i guess it would be way overpowered for his needs - but if you go back a generation or two will it still support vista?). How about an ATI solution?

The rest of the h/w is pretty staightforward. Something like an Athlon64 3200+ (939 version - dont like outdated formats - might want to upgrade something like 3 Years or so and still want to be able to find compatible h/w), some Asus nforce 4 based mobo, 1 GB valueram, 100 GB SATA hd, ...

Guess thats OK. Seems overpowered but he likes stuff to work fast (press the icon - progarm should run straight away with no delay)

Also note that i live in switzerland. i cant get all makes (e.g. no abit)

As the effects in Windows Vista only require 1.8 GB/sec or so video memory, either of the below (or similar) will perform fine:

MSI K8NGM2-FID (GeForce 6150 + nForce 430)
[Onboard GbE LAN, IEEE1394, DVI connector] only. (Ignore the lesser models):

MSI K8NGM2-NBP

http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ also so a very similar nForce 430 + GeForce 6150 board.

@ TabrisDarkPeace: so you are saying that a geforce 6 series will be sufficient? Does it support everything that is needed to run vista ulimate/premium at high setting at 1280x1024 quickly. How much memory must it have?

So you're looking at the basic tiers of Vista, rather than Ultimate etc...? Does Basic come with Aero?
no: i'll buy visa utimate (or premium) for my pc and install this version on my dads pc

To enable Windows Aero, PC systems must meet the following criteria for graphics hardware, with either discrete or UMA solutions:

1. DirectX 9 class graphics hardware that supports WDDM and Pixel Shader 2.0

2. A minimum of 32 bits per pixel

3. Appropriate graphics memory for specified monitor resolutions expressed as total pixels (X dimension multiplied by Y dimension):
(multipled by 4 for 32 bit, then by another 3 or 4, for triple or quad buffering)

1. 64MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolution of 1,310,720 pixels (equivalent to 1280 x 1024) or less.
(comment as above)

2. 128MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 1,310,720 pixels and less than or equal to 2,304,000 pixels (equivalent to 1920 x 1200)

3. 256MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 2,304,000 pixels

4. Graphics memory bandwidth, as assessed by Windows Vista’s built in system assessment tool WinSAT.EXE, of at least 1,800MB/s at following resolution:

1. Desktop PC: at a monitor resolution of 1,310,720 pixels (equivalent to 1280 x 1024)

2. Mobile PC: at the native resolution of built-in display

Since most onboard solutions are already offering over 1,800 MB/sec in WinSAT.exe the integrated GeForce 6150 and Radeon 'X300' (or similar) onboard solutions already 'exceed' the requirement.

The above mainboards should run Vista in well above 'Basic' mode aswell, it should run it with AeroGlass fully enabled if desired. Bear in mind it has a PCI Express Graphics x16 slot ready, if even more power is needed.

It is just a GUI, it isn't going to require a GeForce 7900 GT or Radeon X1900 XT just to run. 😛
