I like the Mac OS and I like 27" and larger monitors. Apple doesn't sell 27" iMacs anymore, so my only option will be a Macbook laptop with a connected external monitor. However, the laptop must be plugged in to use it in clamshell-and-external-monitor mode. Will keeping the laptop permanently plugged in damage the battery? Shorten its life quickly?

You'll see a ton of opinions both ways, but there is at least some mitigation of any potential negative effects built in by Apple. And the important point is that it is a tool and you should use it to do the tasks that you need or want to do. It will last long enough and if eventually needed you can replace the battery. I leave my laptops always plugged when on the road and don't notice any issues after years of using them.
