Hi everyone,

Specs:
MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO.LTD 870-C45
AMD phenom II X4 955
AMD Radeon R9 200 Series
Samsung HDD 1TB
Sandisk Plus 240GB SDD (2 days old)

This is a custom built PC, which I have always had windows 7 home installed. This week, I decided to upgrade to windows 10 on my newly installed SSD. Creatd a boot install on a USB and successfully installed windows 1 on my SSD and formatted my HD.

I then decided to fiddle with the user folder locations, which ended up in a weird location errors that I thought would be easier to solve by installing windows 10 again. Followed the same steps as before, except this time I full formatted the SSD during windows install (full format was the only option I had). Installation was done successfully again and I restarted.

Except this time I receive the following error:

"Windows Falied to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert bla bla
2. Choose language bla bla
3. Clik repair computer

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File:\Boot\BCD
Status:0xc0000000f
Info: The boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors"

I have tried to repair via windows install and it also does not work (repair doesn't conclude). I've reinstalled maybe 2 times again on the SSD and the same error appears. I have also tried to fix the BCD following some tips I found online with fixboot, fixmbr and rebuildbcd. None worked.
Finally I tried to reinstall on my 1TB samsung HD, and it worked (so there is no issue with my install USB). I have Windows 10 on my Samsung but it will not boot properly from the SSD.

The SSD appears on my computer, I scanned for errors and there are none. In the disk manager both drives appear as healthy.

It seems to be an issue with BCD, but I can't seem to fix it...any help would be much appreciated.

Solution

I did check before the initial installation that was successful and they were up-to-date, just checked again via device manager and they both checked out.

It would be best to go directly to the manufacturer's website and check for firmware updates for both there, because device manager may not pick up on the most recent ones. Always update from the manufacturers website.

Checked the SSD in the Sandisk Dashboard and the firmware is up to date, for the MB I' ve downloaded the MSI Live update and the following have been installed (attached pic)

OK, now that your established that the firmware is updated. You can try to repair the MBR (Master Boot Record)

Follow the guide HERE and let me know how you get on.

I've had to do this a few times with my own OS SSD and it has worked for me. Good luck!

Excellent, thank you! I will try this out when I get back from work.

As a side note, I did try out the following guide which didn't fix the issue:

http://windowsreport.com/fix-windows-10-windows-8-will-launch-recovery-boot-configuration-data-file-missing/

And the commands are very similar but in a slightly diff order.

You're welcome. Yeah hopefully that will fix it, but be aware that I've had to also switch out a faulty SATA cable on an SSD/HDD in the past as it kept producing BCD errors too. Then I would have to try and repair the MBR afterwards. There were a few occasions that it has not worked, and I've ended up having to reinstall windows totally. The reset PC option in Windows 8/10 recovery is quite fast nowadays.

I dont think its the SATA cable as its brand new also, as new as the SSD which I got on Friday (and that was working fine during the first install).

Well....I am trying to re-install windows totally or do you mean something else? The issue i've had is that the "repair" option and the "reset PC" option have both failed (did not complete).

Between the first install, that worked and everything was in order, and my attempt to re-install windows 10 there was absolutely no interaction with any of the hardware..the only thing I can think if was that I selected to format the SSD (inside the windows program). I didn't touch the SATA, or the any of the Hard Drives..didn't even touch the case at all.

If you can't get the MBR repaired, and if the reset option did not complete, then the only last option is a full delete partitions and reformat install.

If you are still getting issues, Then try plugging it into a different sata port. + new cables can be faulty too you know, so don't rule that out either.

If that doesn't help, then there simply could be a problem with the drive itself then. If you do manage to get Windows installed and booting again, try downloading HD Tune and running it on the SSD. It's free, and can scan for any problems with the drive. If you find any, then just get it RMA'ed.

MBR repair and/or SATA port/cable check sounds like the next steps though.

Solution

What would an RMA be? Hopefully your guide will work when I give it a try later on, before that, a few more questions:

The guide says "In some cases you may need to run some additional commands." How will I know I'm one of those cases? And would you recommend bootsect /nt60 SYS or bootsect /nt60 ALL? What's the difference? Would "ALL" make changes to all my drives and potentially mess up my hd that is currently working?

Assuming everything goes well, after the final command I would restart the PC and boot from the SSD and it should start normally right?
