Hi all, I'd appreciate a little help clarifying the variants of certain
nvidia cards.

I know about the Pro (if it's still used) and the Ultra versions of cards,
but what's the XT mean?

Is a geforce 5900XT better or worse than a "plain" 5900?.

I'm thinking of picking up a 128mb 5900XT to replace my ati radeon 9800 pro,
I believe the radeon is slightly faster but I'm just sick of all the issues
I get with it, I want something that just works.

Any suggestions very welcome, thanks in advance!

Yes, im planning on gettin a 5700xt / 5900xt.. guess ill get the
5900xt.. anyways.. it goes like this: (im almost sure.. 😛) XT worse,
regular medium, Ultra best...
thats for Nvidia...
All i know, regarding the 5900xt, that theres little to no difference
between this one and a regular one.. im pretty sure that is true for
ALL of the models, not just the 5900...
I suggest you go for the 5900xt because if you see a 5900 its usually
like 25$ more than the XT and its not worth it.. MAYBE its worth 10$
but not more...

If you do find a 5900 non-xt non-ultra it is well worth an extra $25 - but
they are not in production now. The XT cards differ in 3 ways 1. They use
slower memory 2.8ns v 2.2ns 2. They use cut-down cooling which only covers
the FX chip & not the memory. 3. They typically have a slightly slower core
/ memory clock. However there are some exceptions around to these three
points so I guess it pays to look at the specs. If overclocking is of
interest then points 1 & 2 will have a profound effect on the speeds you can
expect to achieve.. indeed many have had success flashing a standard 5900 to
a 5950 ultra but this would not be possible with an XT card.

I've looked at some benchmarks and seems even the 5900 is going to be a
fairly big performance hit from the radeon I have now, I think I'll try and
pick up a geforce 6800, that should be faster I hope.
