So I'm looking to build a computer for gaming and was wondering if someone could look at my parts list and give me any tips. its my first build and my budget is $1000-$1200.
First would be intel based
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 450D
Board: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII HERO
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 8M Skylake Quad-Core 3.4 GHz Or other recommendations that are cheaper
Graphics card: MSI GeForce GTX 960
Ram:G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2133
with 256GB M.2 SSD and 550W modular power supply and aftermarket cpu cooler

Second would be AMD
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 450D
Board: ASUS 970 PRO
CPU: AMD FX-8370 or AMD FX-9590 or other AMD cpu
Graphics card: MSI GeForce GTX 960
Ram: G.SKILL TridentX Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 2133
with 256GB M.2 SSD and 550W modular power supply and aftermarket cpu cooler

I don't have a preference when it comes to AMD or Intel I just want something that is going to perform well. I don't know if the 550W power supply would be enough for either i still need to take a peek at my wattages but any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you can afford the first Intel based one I would go for that. I think a 500w/550w power supply would be sufficient for the parts listed there. You could possibly at a push get away with a 350w
Power supply. Just to be on the safe side I would go for a 500/550w as it leaves room for upgrades etc. The list of parts seems quite good also. Hope this helps. Any questions feel free to ask.

is the i7-6700 worth the $75 more than say the Intel Core i5-6600K 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.5 GHz? or would I still be more than okay with tha

No point in going AMD, especcially when your budget is above 400.

You would be okay with what you have. If you wanted to you could go for the i7 6700k unlocked version if you can afford it. It runs @ 4.00ghz (kit) and @4.2ghz overclocked leaving enough space for pretty much anything. I am hoping to build my own pc using the i7 6700k as in the UK it seems to be good value for money. The reason I am goin for this is so I can do gaming, video editing, music production and design. It gives me enough power and room to do what I need. It's down to you really, and depends what you will use it for.

i would recommend you to go for a AMD processor and a Nvidia gpu........ that is a perfect match and a cheap combination........
