Being given an i7 980x!

I have a pentium G3258 overclocked to 4.4ghz in my gaming pc. My friend is building a brand new pc and is giving me his old one. It has an i7 980x in it. Is that cpu still any good for gaming considering its coming to me for free??

For an old CPU, it is still very highly regarded! Not as good for modern CPU intensive games, but still a worthy processor. Check out the prices for them on ebay! Just bear in mind that it is a different socket type to your current CPU, so will not work with your motherboard (if you were thinking that)

You will need different motherboard , different Ram to use the 980 and its not worth to replace your hardware with 8-9 years old technology

I run a 980x on a Asus R3E board at 4.2Ghz and see about a 10FPS drop compared to my 4670k at stock speeds, both using a 980 SC.

The G3258 vs 980x in single core the G3258 will win but anything after that the 980x will beat it. If your multitasking or gaming/streaming the 980x is the way to go. Now if you want to turn around and sell the 980x system and upgrade yours that would be a better option. But if your just comparing the two I would move back to the 980x build, plus the 1366 sockets are just fun to overclock.

It's the whole pc i'm getting for free so all I really need to do it put in my r9 290x as it's better than the gtx 680 which is in it at the moment and move my SSD over. It already comes with 6 HDD's with about 9tb of storage. Will move my soundcard over too.

I have a i7-980x system, as well, paired with a 390x gpu,does everything I ask it to no problem .
