Is the only benefit for choosing an ATX motherboard over a Micro-ATX just expansion?
Or is there another reason for choosing an ATX motherboard over Micro.
If we are talking about consumer grade boards (H,Z170, B150....) they are usually the same. In the x99 platform the differences are much more severe (less memory slots, less controllers for storage...). There is also this idea that sometimes matx and mitx boards are of a lower quality because they are not as popular. If that is true i don't really know, go figure.

It'll look nicer in an ATX sized case, and you'll usually get more ports and headers. As CBender said, it doesn't necessarily mean the quality is worse in micro ATX boards. They can still have just as powerful VRMs.
