Bent mouse cable

My Alienware Tactx mouse's braided cable has gotten bent. About 4 inches away from the cable's beginning (mouse body). The actual cable is by now out of the cable braid and it turns the mouse off at specific angles which is really annoying during gaming. Can someone help with how I can fix this part of the cable? How can I straighten it or remove just that part of the cable?

Something very similar happened to two Logitech G400 mice that I own. The cable frayed and broken internally at the point where the cable enters the mouse causing it to disconnect. I managed to fix both of them by disassembling the mouse, cutting out the problematic area, and splicing the cable back together. It took me about 20 minutes per mouse.

My first suggestion would be to look at a warranty repair / replacement from Dell. Failing that, see if you have any friends that are reasonably skilled with a soldering iron.

I got this mouse from a friend who had already used it beforehand, so I'm afraid any sort of warranty is terminated by now. I think my dad's got a soldering iron, maybe he knows his ways around with it, is connecting the wires back together a hard job?

It's quite easy if one has the proper equipment. If one doesn't have the proper equipment it'll not only be much harder to do, it will raise the probability of the repair job going wrong. With that said, if the mouse is a goner and the warranty is expired what's left to lose?

This is what is needed:

1. A temperature controlled soldering iron with accompanying fume extractor

2. Some fine solder. Preferably a lead/tin composite; flux core is a plus.

3. Some non-acidic solder flux. Don't use flux meant for plumbing, that stuff is corrosive.

4. A helping-hand (example)to hold the wires in position so that the joint is straight and clean

5. Wire strippers; the wires on my mice were 30 AWG.

6. Black electrical tape
