I do graphic design for both web and print so I need something with good srgb and adobe rgb performance (something with at least 80% will do) and something respectable for gaming (fps, racing, rpg, etc.), not a pro gamer.

I also want to get the amp! 1080 or strix 1080 because even if that's overkill for 1440p, I see myself getting a high end 4k or 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor down the road, I could get a 1070 but it wouldn't run 4k that well and I don't like sli configs because of the massive power draw.

Also, in order to save money and get something proper later, would it be stupid to get a good 1080p monitor of around 24 inches instead?

Solution
The Asus mx27aq seems pretty decent, it slightly over $400 but if you go with the 1070 the you could use the money saved on it

The benq gw2765ht also seems a good budget ips panel
It wouldn't be stupid. You could get a very good quality IPS display @1080p.
both cards will run anything at this resolution and you can obviously upgrade later down the road when you have the money.

A lot will say is overkill, but if you don't have the money atm is better to have a good 1080p IPS screen.

I just saw the review of evga's 1080 sc and I think I should hold on on 4k gaming, average frames on that card and 4k modern titles was about 40, I think I'd be better to get the 1070 and spend a little more on the monitor (since the 1070 looks to be really good at 1440p), what do you think?

4K gaming is not mature yet. 1440p 27'' or 1080p 24'' seem to be the sweet spots for PC gaming. Many people complain about using the PC on a 4K monitor.
Personally I'm aiming for a GTX1070 with a 1440p Monitor. will probably get the card first and then the monitor. Will probably spend more on the monitor than the card but hopefully I will use it a lot longer.

Thanks, this post was very old so I picked your answers as a solution because I don't wanted more attention to this post, also, I went for the asus pb278q which, is nice enough, maybe next year I'll upgrade to the Acer predator ultrawide monitor but this will be enough until then.
