Im thinking about upgrading and getting a 144hz 1080p monitor, wanted to know which card is best, anybody run 144hz on one of these cards? p.s. considering a 980/390x too. thanks for feedback.
I don't play super demanding games, and I would be willing to go down to medium-ish settings, if I could get 144fps, and does anybody think the pascal/Polaris equivalent will do it?
Nobody knows anything and it's all speculation what anyone says at this point, but I'll speculate: the 970 replacement will likely be a 980 performer or possibly even better, and the 980 replacement will likely bet a 980Ti performer or possibly be even better. So use that as a rough guide and the benchmark link I gave you. I'm basing my guesses on history (the 780Ti got beat by the 980 and the 970 came close to the 780Ti).

Wait for Nvidia pascal/ AMD polaris to come out . If you're rushing to get a gpu go for 980 . Nvidia has better driver support . And an R9 390x can perform a lil better than 980 (Only in few games) Also R9 390x is a power hungry card . So I definitely recommend 980.
I could be wrong, but realistically only a 980Ti or AMD Fury can come close to delivering 144 fps @1080p for the vast majority of current AAA games??!! And if you want to do it with max settings you're looking at SLIed GTX970s or Crossfired R9 390s. Right?
Well, you won't be getting 144FPS with either card (or a single 980Ti for that matter) at 1080p, so having a 144Hz monitor is moot. You need 980Ti in SLI to make that happen, and that's only on more GPU friendly games like Star Wars Battlefront and BF4. And even then you won't be seeing 144FPS in games like Witcher 3, Crysis 3, and Far Cry 4. At least not on Ultra quality settings and all the eye candy cranked up anyway.
This link will tell you all you need to know on what to expect:
