My friend needs a cheap motherboard to replace the one that just died on him. He already has cpu / memory / gpu but just needs a motherboard that will support all of it. Links and recommendations would be appreciated, thank you =)

There really aren't many $40 motherboards out there, let alone ones that don't completely suck (I.e. aren't ones from ECS).

For just $20 more you can get a SIGNIFICANTLY better motherboard then anyone you would fine for $40. In my opinion it is by FAR worth it:

Foxconn 780G AM2/AM2+.... has 4x240-pin RAM Slots, PCI-E 16x 2.0, RAID, excellent onboard sound and video, plenty of SATA ports, and great upgrade options.... all for only $66 shipped.

Comparable board for $40 shipped after $10 rebate:

Foxconn A74MX-K AMD 740G Micro ATX

And this deal for $31 after $15 rebate (plus shipping):

TUL TRS690-M1 AMD 690V Micro ATX

You guys should work at Best Buy or Circuit City. You have mad up-sell skillz that are highly prized in retail:

"My budget is $40.00 MAX."

"OK, well, we have this one for $66 and this one for $55."

"Umm...WTF?"
