Question Best CPU for 4060TI

So I believe I have some bottlenecking with my 4060ti. In some games I get some performance dips, where I don't get them on my laptop. I've looked up the best CPU's for the 4060ti where you would get the least bottlenecking, and the most results that come up are the I5 and AMD Ryzen 5. I7 and Ryzen 7 come up sometimes, but I really don't want to go to an I5. Would an I7 13th gen be an alright decision? My specs are

Intel I9 11900k
32gb DDR4
4060TI 8gb
z590 AORUS Master
1080p 165hz Monitor

Also I read that 4060 is now entry level? Would upgrading to 13 gen I9 be okay? Or would a downgrade to I7 (AMD eqv) be better?

There is no "looking up" for that.

Any site or "calculator" that tells you some level of "bottleneck" is pure garbage.


Now, on to your actual "problem"....I would start with software. There is nothing wrong with your combination of parts.

What laptop are you comparing it to?

Nothing really wrong with that system as it is. 11th gen is a little older, but not significantly and is a decent pairing with the 4060 Ti.

4060 Ti isn't quite entry level, but it is a solid 1080p gaming card. If you are getting below 165 FPS and lowering the graphics settings doesn't help, then it is the CPU holding you back.

Confirm your system memory is running at decent speed of at least DDR4 3200 and is in the proper slots for dual channel mode.

Stutters and dips in performance can be for many reasons, including storage related. What drives do you have and are they full?

Newer CPUs certainly have more IPC/Single thread performance that games prefer. But getting anything faster means a new motherboard/CPU/and likely memory.

Here we see the 11900k, Intel comparable parts, and Ryzen comparable parts.

Despite the lower score, the 7800X3D generally produces the best gaming results. With a few exceptions that favor extra CPU cores, which the 13700k has.

7700X can achieve higher clock speeds than the 7800X3D, but the X3D has a large cache pull which means less calls to the system memory, which really speeds up processing. 7800X3D isn't as fast at non-gaming tasks, except maybe the 12700k.

My laptops a Lenovo Legion Slim S7 16ARHa7 AMD. No performance dips anywhere anytime. An example would be Sea of Thieves. I recently reformatted my desktop so storage isn't an issue. Forgot to put that out there. I have a 2TB m.2 SSD chip. Before the format, certain areas would cause a small dip in framerate, and choppiness, but not on my PS5 or laptop. I haven't tried to play it again since the format, so I'll try it again later today. So, as far as CPU goes, if I downgraded, I wouldn't really notice any difference?

To reduce the supposed bottleneck number?

If so, that is absolutely the WRONG thing to do.


What you may be looking for is increased performance, not a decrease in fake bottleneck percentage.

i9-11900k is an 8c/16t part with 16MB of cache 5Ghz
i7-12700k is a 12c/20t part with 25MB of cache 5.1Ghz
i7-13700k is a 16c/24t part with 30MB of cache 5.4Ghz
i7-14700k is a 20c/28t part with 33MB of cache 5.6Ghz
i9-13900k/14900k is 24c/32t part with 36MB of cache 5.8/6Ghz
R7 7700X is an 8c/16t part with 32MB of cache 5.4Ghz
R7 7800X3d is an 8c/16t part with 96 MB of cache 5Ghz

Some games favor the high frequency 6Ghz parts from Intel, and heavily multithreaded games like the added E-cores. Some games favor the cache of the newer CPUs and that is main performance uplift. Which makes some games absolutely faster on the 7800X3D and it is much cheaper then the big i9 chips.

Ryzen 6000 mobile is contemporary architecture to Intel 11th gen, Zen3 and 11th gen came out around the same time. Zen3+ the mobile version is a bit newer, and supports DDR5. The higher bandwidth could be a factor, but I doubt it.

Super super late answer, I really apologize..... But you're right, that's what I do mean. I've always seen "I5 or I7" or AMD equivalent for best combo with 4060, but never i9 series.

Reduction of the bottleneck number is NOT a metric you want to chase.

Instead, increased performance.

It is entirely possible, even likely, to increase performance AND have a larger bottleneck percentage, at the same time.

Ignore that 'bottleneck' nonsense.

i don't know what sort of fps result you are chasing, but you're going about it the wrong way for sure.

my 11700K + RTX 3080 Ti easily hits 100+fps @ 3440x1440, usually sitting right at my 120fps limit in all AAA games i've loaded.

if you're worried about performance issue, what you may be calling the "bottleneck", upgrade your GPU to match the CPU's performance.
don't downgrade the CPU to match the lower level GPU's.

Alright. So maybe I just need to adjust a setting or two in Nvidia control panel to fix something. Has worked before.

What is your ram speed out of interest? Do you have XMP running? You can find this in your bios to xheck. Alternatively if you download a program called cpu-z then it will tell you that information as well within windows.

You mentioned you reinstalled windows so did you manually install the chipset drivers etc for the motherboard?
