Question Best CPU for a temporary upgrade under 100?

I traded my ps5 for a pc and it came with a r5 1600 and a 2060. This is just a temporary pc until I have the money to get a really good pc.

The point of the post is to ask what the best CPU would be to get under 100 on the am4 socket? I keep seeing people say the r5 5600x but I don't wanna spend that money for a short time span of having said CPU. I was debating on a r5 5500 but didn't know if there was a better option I'm just not seeing.

The CPU upgrade depends on the motherboard model. You don't list that. A 5600x might not be supported by your specific motherboard.

A 5600X is a possibility. I don't know if you can find one for $100.
I would update to the 7.10 BIOS before you swap CPUs. Then you can update to the latest.

FWIW for $103.40 you could get the 5500GT which has a max Turbo speed of 4.4 GHz which is 5 percent faster than the 4.2 GHz of a plain 5500.

If you care only about speed. Otherwise its 24 percent more money for 5 percent more speed, so solely based on money, no.

how temporary are you talking? 1-3 months or 6 months + ?
is it worth spending $100 on a cpu for 1-3 months ...... no.
3 months or more.. maybe.
6 months plus. .. yes.. but you could still get something cheap like 3600..(normal or x). or if you need more cores 3700x.. there is not much difference between those to mentioned and the r5 5500..

4 months ago. i did temp upgrade from r5 2600 to r5 4600g.. . and it served me well until i did am5 upgrade in november 2024..
