While I play a couple of games what is the best CPU for the money for re-encoding DVD videos to H264 using Handbrake?

Another priority between performance and cost is a low heat output.

Hi -
I like Handbrake and have been using it for years, but I'm not sure how best to answer your question. This is a trade-off between cost and speed.

Performance will be based on a combination of the number of cores/hyperthreads and the clock speed of your CPU. I guess the final analysis depends on your budget and how long you want to wait for each re-encoding.

I'm still running an i7-920 (with no overclocking), and personally I like to load up the queue in Handbrake and then let my machine run overnight. I can easily re-encode 20 to 30 hours of video overnight.

o I've let hadbrake do it's thing in the background, and the family has not complained about having problems doing whatever else it was they wanted w/ the PC at the same time.

Not really a direct answer to your questions, but I hope this helps.

Thanks GorfTheFrog and GhislainG, The chart is helpful for performance. I'll have to do some work (cough cough) and do a spread sheet myself it looks like. :) Us lazy folks don't like to do that very often.

Gorf... yes. I do pretty much the same thing letting my computer run for 3-5 days straight doing video and other reasons. Handbrake is the best in my opinion. I haven't found anything better for free and as I'm on a very tight budget... I've tried a few of the silly garbage (XiliSoft) by mistake which was a total waste of money before finding Handbrake.
