Best cpu for under 350$?

I'm about to start a new build but I've been out of the cpu loop for awhile.
Looking for something that gives a lot of bang for your buck and viable in terms of future upgrades.

Are you looking at the CPU alone or are you talking about building a system within a chassis? If the latter you're going to need to read through this thread and follow up with the necessary information on this thread.

The i5-8600K is a good choice unless your workload is heavily multi-threaded.

For what? Gaming? Workstation needs? Do you want somethings that's good for now or do you want future proof?

Sorry to the posters here for not specifying my use.
I'll be using it for gaming primarily and digital art somewhat occasionally.
I'm looking for something that can run most games at max and then some(modding) that uses a motherboard that's ideal for future upgrades.

i5-8400 is one of the best bang-for-buck CPUs out there at the moment. Very strong single and multi core performance and 6 cores would suit the digital art. The 8600k is almost £100 more but possibly would be worth it if you are planning on overclocking. If not i'd go with the 8400
